Weekend Outlook: Musical Performances, Bingo, and More

Berkshire County is hosting a variety of events this warm weekend including live music, Bingo, outdoor activities, and more. Look for Easter egg hunts and scrambles here.    Head to Downtown North Adams on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. for the monthly First Friday event.    Galleries, businesses and organizations are participating in the April First Friday "Clean & Green" event.    Second Chance Composting and the city of North Adams will be accepting recyclables and composting materials under the Mohawk marquee, the Hissing Booth is back at Plant Connector, WallaSauce will be making fanny packs out of old material and a number of galleries

Mayor Chooses Sgt. Bailey as Interim North Adams Chief

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A nearly 20-year veteran of the Police Department has been named as interim police chief effective Monday, April 10.    Mayor Jennifer Macksey said on Friday that she has appointed Sgt. Mark Bailey to temporarily replace departed Chief Jason Wood. Lt. Anthony Beverly had stepped into the leadership role last month when Wood was put on administrative leave.    "I have the outmost confidence in Bailey's ability to lead this department to be the best and most professional department it can be," the mayor said in a statement.    "I extend my gratitude to Lt. SVMC Lifts Universal Mask Requirement

BENNINGTON, VT. — Beginning April 10, 2023, masks will be optional for patients, visitors, and staff without any respiratory symptoms at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC) and its campuses.   Individuals with respiratory symptoms will still be required to wear a mask, and immunocompromised patients are encouraged to continue to wear masks.   SVMC has had a universal mask requirement in place since the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hospitalizations for COVID and other respiratory illnesses have remained low for several months, and the health system vaccinated more than tens of thousands of community members at its widely successful resource center. North Adams Man Pleads Guilty to Firearm, Drug Charges

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — On Wednesday, April 5 John Bump, Jr., of North Adams, pleaded guilty to Illegal Possession of a Firearm, Possession with the Intent to Distribute Heroin and Possession of Ammunition.     The charge of Illegal Possession of a Large Capacity Feeding Device was dismissed by the Commonwealth after acceptance of the plea.    According to a statement from the District Attorney's Office, in March of 2023, Det. Joshua Zustra, of the North Adams Police Department, and members of the North Adams and Adams Police departments were conducting a drug investigation of the defendant and his home in North Adams. Communities Lifting Winter Parking Bans

With the nicer spring weather hopefully on the way, communities are lifting parking bans across the county.   The Overnight Parking Ban for the City of North Adams has been lifted effective immediately.  On street parking at night will be allowed.  Avoid parking in no parking designated areas or in handicapped spaces.   The winter parking ban ended in Adams on March 31   Communities that would like us to include their parking ban changes can contact iBerkshires.com at info@iberkshires.com.

Clarksburg Budget Has Officials Considering June Town Meeting

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — The Select Board is considering pushing the annual town meeting into June to give school officials more time to find offsets in their budget.    Town and school officials met last week to discuss the town's fiscal woes — the budget is up, reserves are down and, for the second year, there will be no free cash available.   But the elementary school budget is up 8.5 percent largely because of the cost of a student's out-of-district placement, pegged at $175,000 to $200,000.    "We're looking at total revenues of $4.978 million and the budget that you see is at $5,108,000," said Town Administrator Carl McKinney

FirstFriday 'Clean & Green' Initiatives in North Adams

NORTH ADAMS, Mass.— April's FIRST Friday event will focus on helping North Adams become more Clean & Green starting April 7.    Several downtown shops, galleries, restaurants, and the First Friday crew will be organizing events focused on sustainability, as Earth Day approaches. Participants can help pick up sidewalk trash, and drop off their compost and recycling.   Theme-related events taking place:   The First Baptist Youth Group will lead a trash pick-up crew around downtown. North Adams School Building Committee Gets First Look at School Concepts

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Nearly a dozen options for Brayton and Greylock elementary schools were presented to the School Building Committee on Tuesday.   The preliminary concepts covered new buildings, renovations and additions at both sites as well as different configurations of grades.   These are not plans but rather possibilities for the committee consider as it determines its preferred choice for the city's elementary pupils. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Chingon Taco Truck is trading in its mobility for a firmer foundation at Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Arts.    The Mass MoCA Commission approved a dual concept that will see the opening of new restaurant Casita in the former Gramercy and the spirit of Chingon as the takeout window in the courtyard.    Mariah and Justin Forstmann's "pandemic passion project" (as they describe it) resulted in an 18-foot taco truck that has spent summers in the Mass MoCA Courtyard and at various fields and venues around the county, and popups during the winter. SVMC Welcomes Jennifer R. LaChance to its Orthopedics Practice
