There was too much eating, drinking, wassailing and other festiveness for the colony's righteous rulers. Even after the ban was lifted, Christmas was treated as a regular day until its popularization during the

By Tammy Daniels , iBerkshires Staff
05:43PM / Wednesday, December 18, 2024

What should you know about RMDs?
11:16AM / Wednesday, December 18, 2024

You may spend many decades contributing to your IRA and 401(k), but eventually you will likely need to take the money out — in fact, you must take the money out or face penalties. What should you know about these mandatory withdrawals?

Here are some of the basics:

What are they called? Mandatory withdrawals are technically called required minimum distributions, or RMDs. When must I take RMDs? If you were born before 1951, you've probably already begun taking RMDs. If you were born between 1951 and 1959, your RMD age is 73. And if you were born in 1960 or later, your RMD age is 75. You can postpone accepting your first RMD until April 1 of the year after

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts is projecting reductions in state Department of Higher Education funding next year.    President James Birge informed the trustees at Thursday's meeting that this has to do with change to the funding formula used by the department.    "We will see about $140,000 less in revenue from that," he said. "We're trying to advocate with the state not to implement the change ... It's a difficult argument to make for us, but we are still trying to make it."   In response to questions from trustees, Birge said the larger institutions are benefitting from the formula change. By Tammy Daniels, iBerkshires Staff
05:22AM / Tuesday, December 17, 2024
CLARKSBURG, Mass. — The school roof has become a priority after the recent snow and rain has caused some significant leaks.    Principal Sandra Cote attended Monday's Select Board meeting after sending a video of a particularly bad leak to Chair Robert Norcross.    "We've had two other classrooms today that had sprung leaks that we hadn't typically had," she said. "We do have one that it seems to be getting worse, and I know we had a horrible rainstorm and the ice has backed up on the roof."   Cote said the custodian had been on the roof breaking up the ice, and it seemed the water may have been coming through an exhaust
