North Adams Fatal Fire Deemed Arson; Son Facing Murder Charges

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Monday's fatal fire has been deemed an arson and the son of the victims has been arrested in their deaths.    Darius Hazard, 44, was arraigned in Central Berkshire District Court on Tuesday on one count of arson in the fire that led to the deaths of his parents, Donald Hazard, 83, and Venture Hazard, 76.   He was also arrested on murder charges. He will be arraigned on Wednesday morning on those counts in Northern Berkshire District Court.   The fire was reported at about 7 a.m. on Monday morning at 77 Francis St., where Hazard was living with his parents. Be Aware of Runners Near BCC During Thursday Morning Fund-Raiser

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Residents are asked to be aware of traffic delays on outer West Street along the Berkshire Community College campus down to Meadow Ridge on Thanksgiving morning between 9 and 10 a.m. for the 10th annual MountainOne Thankful 5K.   The annual event is a fundraiser for the local Berkshire County food pantries.   As of Tuesday afternoon, there are close to 700 runners registered for the race. The event will have walkers and runners and more than 100 students participating for free.   Attendees are asked to remain on the left side of the road throughout the event to ensure traffic can flow through the event. Elks, Ocean State Donate 22 Coats to Local Veterans

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Elks Lodge 487 teamed up with Ocean State Job Lots for a second year to provide winter coats to veterans in need.    A total of 44 coats were purchased, with half of those being distributed through the Veterans Services Office at City Hall.    First, the Elks purchased $1,000 worth of coats at the discount store; they were then donated back to the store and sent to a distribution center to be donated to veterans. The store reimbursed the Elks with gift cards worth the same value as the coats, which were then used to buy 22 more coats for local veterans.     This is part of Ocean State's 10th annual "Buy, Give, Get"

Two Dead in Fatal North Adams Fire

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Two people were found dead in Monday morning's fire on Francis Avenue.    The Berkshire District Attorney's Office on Monday afternoon confirmed that firefighters had entered the single-family home to search for occupants and found the two already deceased. No other individuals were located inside the residence.     The names of the fire victims are being withheld until notification of next of kin. The DA's Office stated that an update would be released once that is done.     The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of their deaths. Thanksgiving will be observed on Thursday, Nov. 27. The day is a national holiday inspired by the first Thanksgiving dinner shared between the Pilgrims and Wampanoags in 1621 at Plymouth. The living history museum Plimoth Patuxet continues the tradition each year with a recreation of the event in which visitors can participate.

North Berkshire Secondary Schools Study Group Hones RFP to Find Consultant

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Northern Berkshire Secondary Sustainability task force Tuesday finalized the objectives it wants addressed in a study it plans to commission this winter.   Representatives from three North County school districts plus the school union serving elementary schools in Clarksburg, Florida, Rowe and Savoy met for about an hour and a quarter in a City Hall conference room to craft the request for proposals they plan to issue to education consultants.   The group of administrators and school committee members from North Adams, Hoosac Valley, Mount Greylock and the North Berkshire School Union agreed to meet again on Tuesday, Dec.9, at 4:30 to finalize the

Williams College to Donate Kitchen Equipment to North Adams Airport

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The vacant restaurant space in Harriman & West Airport's Administration Building will finally get some equipment. 

Airport Commission Chair Jim Haskins announced on Tuesday that Williams College has offered to donate some surplus kitchen equipment to the proposed restaurant space.

Haskins said the college plans to renovate three of its on-campus dining spaces. When it switches out the old equipment, the city is welcome to it.

"They said when they start taking it apart we can have it …That is sitting there waiting for us," he said. "That will save whoever wants to go in there a lot of money and make it more attractive."

North Adams Emergency Services Collecting Toys for Local Children

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — If you see emergency vehicles at Walmart on Saturday — give them a toy.    The annual Emergency Service Toy Drive will be accepting new, unwrapped toys for needy families from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.    The emergency responders will be set up near the Walmart entrance and will be accepting suitable toys for ages zero to 12 like board games, dolls and action figures, building blocks, art supplies and sports equipment.   Toys can also be dropped off until Dec. 11 at the police station, fire station, ambulance station and Bright Ideas Brewery. Clarksburg Cautious on Accepting Briggsville Water Grants

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — The town has hired a new accountant and received funds to continue work on Middle Road, but it's taking cautious steps regarding grants for the Briggsville Water District.    Much of Monday's discussion revolved around grants for the Briggsville Water District. The district has a state Rural Development grant of $140,000 to be used as a 25 percent match to a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant of more than $400,000 toward upgrading and repairing the independent public water system.   The district has been struggling for years to update its infrastructure and prepare for future needs.
