NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The circus has come to town for this year's Fall Foliage Festival. In line with this year's parade theme of Berk du Soleil, Mill Town Circus's bright yellow and blue tent went up this week at Noel Field Athletic Complex and will open on Friday night with a 90-minute production inspired by the city's manufacturing history.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — McCann's Cross Country team will host a Cookie Contest Fundraiser on Friday, Oct. 4, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the North Adams American Legion. The event will feature cookies, milk, and music, along with raffle prizes. Tickets are priced at $20 for adults and $5 for children under 12, while children under 3 can attend for free. Local baker Erika Bailey of Bailey's Bakery will serve as a judge for the cookie contest, which encourages participants to showcase their best homemade cookies.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. – The Berkshire Running Foundation is eager to kick off the fundraising efforts surrounding the 9th annual MountainOne Thankful 5K to be held on Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 28 at 9 a.m. at Berkshire Community College. This year the Thankful 5K expands to include walkers, virtual participants and a new training program for the community. The annual event is a fundraiser hosted by the Foundation to raise much needed funds for the South Community Food Pantry and the local Fuel Assistance Fund.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The Up Front for DeMar 5-kilometer race and 1-mile walk is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 10, at 9 a.m. The annual event honors SPC Michael R. DeMarsico, age 20, who volunteered to be "up front"', taking the lead of his battalion, protecting them and searching for dangerous IEDs. He lost his life in Afghanistan on Aug. 16, 2012. Pre-registered runners or walkers will have a $20 registration fee. Day of event registration will be available at the starting line area from 7 to 8:30 a.m. and will be $25. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The public schools are seeing some ups and downs in MCAS scores for 2024 but improvement overall from last year compared to state data.  To the Editor: The most recent U.S. Census data on record indicates that North Adams experienced a population decline of 26 people from 2019 to 2022, averaging a difference less than 7 people per year. However, one major point the new Greylock opponents argue is that the school population will be cut in half, with several hundred fewer students over the next decade. They claim that only one elementary school will be needed, negating the necessity of investing in a second school. Despite where they get their numbers, their projected enrollment figures do not align with the Census data showing a minute population decline the past few years.

I moved to North Adams in 2021, and I have been overwhelmingly impressed by the spirit of collaboration on perseverance that I have experienced here. New England is littered with small factory — or mill — towns that were decimated by the loss of one singular employer, and North Adams still feels the absence of so many families that no longer call this place home. A lot has been said for and against building a new Greylock School in the city of North Adams. The rhetoric is getting heated over the cost, over the impact on property taxes, over the need for a new school building faced with a declining student population. These are all good points for discussion and the cost to the city and further to the taxpayer should not be ignored. As former mayor, city councilor, School Committee member and School Building Committee member, I have certainly had my share of whether or not things are needed and affordable. I'm writing today to express my concerns about the proposition to build a new K-2 school to replace the current K-2 school, Brayton Elementary. There are several reasons why voters should vote "No" on this proposal: the declining school population, the tax burden on the citizens of North Adams and our crumbling infrastructure.
It was projected that by the time the build is completed, there will be only 250 children attending this school. In addition to that, the cost of the bond (approximately $270 on average per year) will be pushed to the taxpayers of North Adams. The tax increase of $270 is really for the next few years, but with taking a $20 million loan
