NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The new owners of Meng's Pan-Asian are being ordered to get recertified on food safety standards after city inspectors found violations at the Main Street restaurant.   Code Enforcement Officer Heather DeMarsico asked the Board of Health on Wednesday to require them to retake the ServSafe training and tests.    ServSafe is a program of the National Restaurant Association that sets standards for safe food handling and restaurant management.   DeMarsico told the board that she had shut down the restaurant for a week in September when following up on complaints from two customers who said they had become ill after consuming food from the

North Adams Schools Seeing Bright Spots on MCAS Scores
By Tammy Daniels, iBerkshires Staff
05:48AM / Wednesday, October 02, 2024
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The public schools are seeing some ups and downs in MCAS scores for 2024 but improvement overall from last year compared to state data.    "One of the things that they identified statewide was that even though everybody was hoping that the scores would show up now that we're farther away from the pandemic, statewide, they saw a drop in ELA scores this past year," Timothy Callahan, assistant superintendent of curriculum, instruction, and assessment, told the School Committee on Monday.    "They also showed flat results in math, other than an improvement in third grade statewide, and then science results show improvement in

Letter: Support Next Generation With New Greylock School
Letter to the Editor,
06:00PM / Tuesday, October 01, 2024

To the Editor:

The most recent U.S. Census data on record indicates that North Adams experienced a population decline of 26 people from 2019 to 2022, averaging a difference less than 7 people per year. However, one major point the new Greylock opponents argue is that the school population will be cut in half, with several hundred fewer students over the next decade.

They claim that only one elementary school will be needed, negating the necessity of investing in a second school. Despite where they get their numbers, their projected enrollment figures do not align with the Census data showing a minute population decline the past few years.

The city's population appears to be

Letter: Vote Yes for Greylock School Project
Letter to the Editor,
05:05PM / Tuesday, October 01, 2024

To the Editor:

I am writing to encourage all of your North Adams readers to vote Yes on Tuesday to invest in our school district, our students, and the future of our community.

I moved to North Adams in 2021, and I have been overwhelmingly impressed by the spirit of collaboration on perseverance that I have experienced here. New England is littered with small factory — or mill — towns that were decimated by the loss of one singular employer, and North Adams still feels the absence of so many families that no longer call this place home. But the people here now — the entrepreneurs developing new industries, the artists finding inspiration among the

Letter: Show North Adams Children They Are Valued on Oct. 8
Letter to the Editor,
01:40PM / Tuesday, October 01, 2024

To the Editor:

A lot has been said for and against building a new Greylock School in the city of North Adams. The rhetoric is getting heated over the cost, over the impact on property taxes, over the need for a new school building faced with a declining student population. These are all good points for discussion and the cost to the city and further to the taxpayer should not be ignored.

As former mayor, city councilor, School Committee member and School Building Committee member, I have certainly had my share of whether or not things are needed and affordable. Managing a city and a school district are full of choices based not only on need but on funding. Today as a city and a school

Letter: Vote No on Greylock School Proposal
Letter to the Editor,
01:35PM / Tuesday, October 01, 2024

To the Editor:

I'm writing today to express my concerns about the proposition to build a new K-2 school to replace the current K-2 school, Brayton Elementary. There are several reasons why voters should vote "No" on this proposal: the declining school population, the tax burden on the citizens of North Adams and our crumbling infrastructure.

It was projected that by the time the build is completed, there will be only 250 children attending this school. In addition to that, the cost of the bond (approximately $270 on average per year) will be pushed to the taxpayers of North Adams.

The tax increase of $270 is really for the next few years, but with taking a $20 million loan
