MCLA To Host Clowning Workshop

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) Arts & Culture will offer a workshop on contemporary improv and clowning techniques with instructor David Lane.    This workshop is open to anyone ages 17 and up. The series starts on Saturday, Feb. 4, and will run each Saturday throughout the month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the MCLA Art Lab.     It is free and open to the public, however, space is limited and each class builds on the last. Planning for Cheshire Memorial Day Parade Already Underway

CHESHIRE, Mass. — The town is has already begun working on plans for its annual Memorial Day parade, scheduled for 1 p.m. on May 29.

The Board of Selectman voted to form a separate Memorial Day Parade Committee last year. Board Chair Michelle Francesconi gave an update on the parade at the board's meeting Tuesday, saying this year's festivities will include reading essays submitted by students of Cheshire, something returning from previous years.

"There's no limit to the amount of essays that we would accept. Any essays that don't get accepted to be read at that the event would be published in something, or at least be put up and made available," she said.

Adams COA, Town Seek Funds for Memorial Building Bathrooms

ADAMS, Mass. — The Council on Aging is still waiting to transition its programming from the Visitor Center to the Memorial Building and is looking to the Community Development Department for help. 

The COA has been waiting for additional bathroom facilities to be completed for the facility, but the council and the town have so far been unable to obtain grant or other funding for the work.

 

COA Director Sarah Fontaine said they are working with Community Development to find funds for the bathrooms and other small improvements, including increased entrance accessibility, renovations to the former music room and fixed windows.

MCLA and Habitat for Humanity Partner to Offer Free Tax Assistance

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) and its Department of Business Administration are partnering with Habitat for Humanity to offer free tax preparation services to local residents in need through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.    MCLA will offer in-person, drop-off, and virtual tax assistance to qualified taxpayers beginning February 6.     Individuals can call Habitat for Humanity at (413) 442-3184 to schedule an appointment or drop off tax documents at the site and a certified volunteer will work to prepare the tax return. Drop-off hours occur on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4-8 p.m. in MCLA's Murdock

North Adams Movieplex Closing 'Indefinitely'

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — North Adams Movieplex is closing its doors at the end of the month.    The theater posted on its Facebook page that it "would be closing its doors indefinitely on Jan. 31.   "We thank each & every one of our customers for the support in these challenging times."   This was accompanied by the image of darkened theater added to its Facebook profile.    Plaza owner First Harford Realty referred inquiries to the theater's box office and iBerkshires has asked for comment.    This will the second movieplex to close in the area in the wake of the pandemic: Regal Cinemas at the Berkshire Mall permanently

North Adams Taxi Service Could Face Suspension

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The police chief is asking the City Council to suspend the license for OTT Taxi over a number of violations of city ordinance.    Police Chief Jason Wood told the council at a public hearing on Tuesday night that the taxi service had registered vehicles improperly, that owner John Lord was stopped with a fare and later seen driving taxis despite having a license restriction and that a 16-year-old driver had been stopped by police and found to have a suspended license.      "We're not watching OTT Taxi like a hawk, but we routinely get complaints from the citizens," said the chief. Berkshire County Braces for Another Winter Storm

Guess what? More snow   The US National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Wednesday, Jan. 25, for Berkshire County.   The watch is in effect from 11 am to Thursday, Jan. 26 at 4 pm.   Expect heavy mixed precipitation with total snow accumulations of 4 to 9 inches. A light ice accumulation is also possible.    Snow will develop early Wednesday afternoon, becoming moderate to heavy through the evening with rates of .5 to 1 inch per hour. The snow will become a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain Wednesday night before temperatures rise above freezing and precipitation turns to rain.   Wind gusts could blow as high as 35 mph.
