PITTSFIELD, Mass. – The Community Italian-American Organization Soccer Hall of Fame Thursday inducted 11 new members in a ceremony at Berkshire Hills Country Club. The Class of 2023 includes former student-athletes who won six Berkshire County MVP awards, 23 all-Berkshire selections, 12 all-Western Mass selections and three all-Massachusetts selections. In addition to recognizing the great players of past high school soccer seasons, CIAO honored 21 current high school seniors with the annual CIAO Hall of Fame Scholarships. MONTPELIER, Vt. — The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department says keeping native turtles as pets is prohibited because it can harm the turtle and pose threats to wild turtle populations. "Capturing a wild turtle and keeping it as a pet, even if only for a short time, is detrimental to that individual turtle and also to Vermont's turtle populations as a whole," said Vermont Fish and Wildlife herpetologist Luke Groff. Rachel Branch, who has run three times before for the corner office, has taken out nomination papers for mayor. She has a long history in public service and advocacy and has been a respite foster-care parent. Former City Clerk Joshua Vallieres has thrown his name out for City Council. Vallieres had been elected to the School Committee but had to resign because of his position in City Hall; he left the clerk's office last month. North Adams Man Involved in Shooting Last Year Sentenced to Prison09:36PM / Wednesday, May 10, 2023 | | PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A North Adams man charged with brandishing a firearm outside a local bar last year has been sentenced to a dozen years in prison. Keith Larrabee, 27, of East Quincy Street, pleaded guilty on Monday in Berkshire Superior Court to counts of drug trafficking, drug possession, illegal possession of ammunition and firearms and assault and battery related to three incidents in North Adams. "Overall, we close the year in the black, which you want to do, with some money on hand and we were able to clean up some of our our books," said Mayor Jennifer Macksey, describing "accounting deficiencies" in the past. The city's fiscal 2022 free cash was certified at $1,953,766. Of that, $984,145 was transferred into the stabilization account. Break in North Adams Main Sends Sewage Into Hoosic River Staff Reports, 04:08PM / Tuesday, May 09, 2023 | |
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A broken sewer main on North Eagle Street sent a cascade of sewage into the Hoosic River on Monday. City workers had fixed the broken pipe shortly after noontime Tuesday. Commissioner of Public Services Timothy Lescarbeau said the 6-inch main had collapsed in front of 280 Eagle St. "The break was opened up and flow diverted back into the sanitary sewer system," he wrote early Tuesday morning. The line picks up all the houses along the street and Clarksburg.
