North Adams Has 13 Candidates So Far for Council

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A couple more candidates have taken out papers for the November city election but so far there are not enough names to consider a preliminary election.   There are now 12 possible candidates; 19 would trigger a preliminary election.    Incumbent Wayne Wilkinson and Andrew Fitch are the latest to toss their hat in the ring as of early Friday; Lisa Blackmer, council president, has also taken papers out. She will be seeking her eighth nonconsecutive term   Wilkinson will be running for his fifth elected term on the council. He is a real estate appraiser and has also served on the Planning Board and was chairman of the Mobile Home Rent Control

SteepleCats Drop Both Ends of Double-Header

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The Upper Valley Nighthawks Sunday scored two runs in the top of the ninth to earn a 6-5 win over the SteepleCats and a double-header sweep at Joe Wolfe Field.   Sam Sherman went 2-for-3 for North Adams in the Game 2 loss.   In Game 1, a 6-3 Upper Valley win, the Nighthawks took advantage of four North Adams errors.   The SteepleCats (1-10) go to Holyoke to face the Blue Sox on Wednesday.

Massachusetts Elks Mark 100th Anniversary of 'The Elk on the Trail'

NORTH ADAMS, Mass.—Applications are open for the 2023 Berkshire Bank STEM Academy for incoming first-year students at MCLA.    The program accepts up to 15 students enrolled in a STEM major or who have expressed interest in STEM fields. The 2023 program will run from July 23 to July 27. Savoy Students Create Book Walk Based on 'Old Rock'

Librarian Maggie Donahue led the project and each child was assigned a page.  SAVOY, Mass. — Students at the Emma L. Miller Memorial Elementary School created a book walk based on the book "Old Rock" by children's author Deb Pilutti.    "So it made them really think about the characters. You have 42 different kids drawing the same rock. But every page looks different in 42 different ways," Librarian Maggie Donahue, who led the project said. SteepleCats Fall in 10 Innings

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The Mystic Schooners scored four runs in the top of the 10th inning on Thursday to earn an 8-4 win over North Adams SteepleCats.   Landon Moran went 2-for-4 with a double, and Danny Melnick homered for Mystic.   Samuel Tackett went 1-for-4 with an RBI for North Adams, which got five inning of scoreless pitching from starter Nathaniel Chudy.   The SteepleCats (1-7) host Ocean State on Friday.

Body of Man Accused in Adams Stabbing Found, DA Confirms

SAVOY, Mass. — Police located the body of Jeffrey Cote, who was wanted for a stabbing incident last week, about a half mile from his home on Thursday morning.

District Attorney Timothy Shugrue confirmed that he died by suicide but has not revealed the cause or time of death.  

He reported that no weapons were found around Cote and he was believed to have never left the area of his property after the incident.

The body was found by the State Police Special Emergency Response Team and K9 unit around 10 a.m. after nearly continuous searches since June 7, when Cote allegedly broke into the home of his ex-girlfriend and stabbed her numerous times. His body will be
