By Tammy Daniels, iBerkshires Staff
04:38PM / Thursday, July 14, 2022

Harpin and Jennifer Barbeau voting against.   The General Government Committee on Monday had recommended returning to the state law standard of 30 days or within three meetings, whichever is longer.    Councilors have said the two-week deadline has been difficult, particularly when there have been multiple meetings within a short period

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The City Council on Tuesday approved the transfer of $241,699 from the fiscal 2021 free cash account to stabilization and a half-million in transfers to close out fiscal 2022.   "We ended up in a good place, more to be reported on that as the numbers come rolling in," said Mayor Jennifer Macksey.   She expected "some decent reserves" when the fiscal 2022 free cash is certified.    The mayor said the stabilization account had $574,000 in it, bringing the total amount now to about $815,699. This zeroed out the free cash account; if it had not been transferred, the funds would have rolled into the free cash calculations for

By Tammy Daniels, iBerkshires Staff
07:03PM / Tuesday, July 12, 2022
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The General Government Committee won't recommend a draft proposal on codes of conduct for officials but encouraged committee member Ashley Shade to continue researching the issue.    Shade had proposed guidelines for professional conduct shortly after taking a seat this year on the City Council and had been charged with bringing language back to the council.    The council's Rules of Order relating to conduct simply state that members should avoid personalities and libel and address each other respectfully during meetings. But tensions between council members have spilled over onto social media, communications between them, as well as a

Prepare Yourself for a Long Retirement
Submitted by Edward Jones,
11:52AM / Tuesday, July 12, 2022

We all want to live long lives. We all expect to live long lives. But are we financially prepared for this longevity?

Before we get to the issue of preparation, let’s look at a couple of interesting findings from a 2022 survey by Age Wave and Edward Jones:

The surveyed retirees said, on average, they expect to live to 89, and they said the ideal length of retirement is 29 years. When asked if they want to live to 100, nearly 70% of the respondents said "yes." The main reason for this desire for long life? To spend more years with their family and friends.

Of course, none of us can see into the future and know how long we’ll be around. But with advances in medical
