The Rev. King waves to the hundreds of thousands gathered on the Washington Mall in 1963 when he gave the 'I Have a Dream' speech. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is being celebrated Monday, Jan. 15. It is a federal holiday to commemorate the birthday of the civil rights activist born Jan. 15, 1929. It is observed on the third Monday in January.
King, a Baptist minister, led the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s by espousing nonviolent protest. His best-known address, the "I Have a Dream" speech, was given in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., to a crowd of 250,000 who participated in the March on Washington. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — On behalf of the Drury Portrait of a Graduate Student Team and Drury staff, North Adams Public Schools families and community members are invited to attend Drury High School's first annual End of Semester Showcase. The showcase takes place on Jan. 23 from 11:30AM–2:00PM at the school. The showcase will offer audiences an understanding of what Drury students have learned during their Project-Based Learning courses, and the types of academic content they've explored. CLARKSBURG, Mass. — The town finally has a Finance Committee in place after nearly two years. Moderator Ronald Boucher informed the Select Board on Thursday that he had appointed Carla Fosser and Charles "Chuck" Lewitt for terms ending on Jan. 11 in 2025 and 2026, respectively. "They play a very, very important role here in the town," said Boucher, whose position is authorized to appoint the three-person committee. "I understand the Select Board can oversee [the finances] but really those guys are the checks and balances to make sure we're set up correctly and moving forward." NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The City Council on Tuesday confirmed a number of reappointments to commissions and boards and reviewed Rules of Order for the new term. This was the first regular meeting of the newly sworn in council and its President Bryan Sapienza. However, Tuesday night's sleet and snow kept some councilors home but enough for a quorum for the half-hour meeting. Attending were Sapienza and Councilors Lisa Blackmer, Keith Bona, Andrew Fitch and Peter Oleskiewicz.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The former Eleanor Sonsini Animal Shelter is gearing up to relaunch under a new name once it secures a location. No Paws Left Behind hopes to open in North Adams, carrying on the no-kill shelter's legacy of homing cats and dogs. The Sonsini shelter announced its closing last summer and manager Noelle Howland saved it by taking leadership.
"We're pretty much ready to go but I just don't have a location yet," Howland said.
The municipal shelter in North Adam's Department of Public Works building is a possible location, she said, but it is a multi-step process that has not yet been set in stone. She added that there are "so many
