NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The Vermont Mountaineers Saturday beat the North Adams SteepleCats, 10-1, on Hometown Heroes Night at Joe Wolfe Field. Prior to the game, first responders from throughout North County plus the Massachusetts Forest Fire Control and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation were recognized in pregame ceremonies. Many of the emergency services brought their cruisers, firetrucks, ambulances and even a snowplow for families to check out before the game. DALTON, Mass. – Julia McComish went 2-for-3 with a triple at the plate and threw two scoreless innings in the circle on Saturday morning as the Berkshire Force 14-and-under travel softball team beat the Greylock Thunder, 6-2, in the 15th annual CRA Invitational at Pine Grove Park. But the Force will have to beat the Thunder one more time on Sunday morning to get a crack at the title. The South Troy Dodgers earned wins over Dalton and the Force on Saturday to capture the top seed in the four-team division. DALTON, Mass. – The Greylock Thunder travel softball program opened the CRA Tournament on Friday night with a pair of victories. The Thunder knocked off host Dalton in the 12-and-under and 14-and-under division openers at Pine Grove Park by scores of 9-1 and 20-7, respectively. The 10U division also got underway on Friday night, with the ACS Swat downing Dalton, 15-8. In the 14U game, Bayleigh Tatro led the way, going 3-for-3 with a home run, a triple and three RBIs in a 22-hit attack for Greylock. Johnny Ruggiero, who came into the game with a 1.82 earned run average in seven appearances this summer, lowered his ERA to 1.70 after going seven innings on the mound and earning his second win of the season. NORTH HUDSON, N.Y. -- The Greylock Thunder 12-and-under travel softball team Sunday beat the Webster (N.Y.) Xtreme in the final round of Rhyan Towne Memorial Scholarship Fund Softball Tournament. The Thunder went 2-1 in pool play to earn the third seed for bracket play in the tournament. Then it won three straight bracket games to claim the championship. The Planning Board on Monday approved an application for Steeple City Jiu Jitsu to set up shop in the former Green, a community and event space operated by Terra Nova Church. The church, which has branches in Albany and Saratoga, N.Y., closed in North Adams last fall, and the Green along with it. The space had been used for community forums, farmers markets, and other events.
