Veteran Spotlight: Jeanne Bokina Christie, Red Cross
By Wayne Soares, Special to iBerkshires
04:47PM / Sunday, May 14, 2023
FALMOUTH, Mass. — Jeanne Bokina Christie served her country as a "Donut Dollie" during the Vietnam War. I found her to be full of positive energy with an amazing, fun-loving personality. It was easy to see the tremendous impact that she had on our soldiers in Vietnam.   She was recruited by the Red Cross for its Supplemental Recreation Activities Overseas (SRAO) program upon graduation from the University of Wisconsin. The then 21-year-old made a quick trip home to Madison, Wisc., then left via Washington, D.C., for Southeast Asia.    "We went in, in blackout conditions when we landed in Saigon," she said. "We were given shelter that evening in

Turtles Must be Left in the Wild
09:19AM / Saturday, May 13, 2023
MONTPELIER, Vt. — The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department says keeping native turtles as pets is prohibited because it can harm the turtle and pose threats to wild turtle populations.   "Capturing a wild turtle and keeping it as a pet, even if only for a short time, is detrimental to that individual turtle and also to Vermont's turtle populations as a whole," said Vermont Fish and Wildlife herpetologist Luke Groff.  "Releasing captured turtles back into the wild comes with risks as well."     Groff said the risks include introducing diseases or disrupting the genetics of wild populations.    "Adult turtles often have

Letter: Disappointment in Local Leadership to secure Shelter Solutions
Letter to the Editor,
03:00PM / Thursday, May 11, 2023

To the Editor:

I have a pit in my stomach this morning after reading about the decision against making Berkshire Towers a homeless shelter.

I am utterly disappointed by Mayor Macksey, The North Adams City Council, Representative Barrett, and President Birge in your handling of this situation.

You have all aided in the further traumatization of families seeking shelter.

There will never be enough resources to support people who are unhoused until you all make it a priority to support those resources. When someone redevelops an apartment building — no one questions whether we have enough resources available to support tenants moving in. But suddenly when we are talking about
