 LENOX, Mass. – The 47th annual Josh Billings RunAground Triathlon returns to Camp Mah-Kee-Nac on Sept. 10. This year, Abby Chaput will be calling the shots as the new race director. Reflecting on her new role and the tenure of her predecessor, Patty Spector, Chaput said “assuming the position of someone with such big ties in the community like Patty has been an experience, but I am honored and excited to now lead this prominent local event. McCann Tech Students Plan Charity Run for Maui Fire ReliefCommunity submission,

 CHESHIRE, Mass. — The McCann Tech cross country team on Sept. 16 will host a 5-kilometer trail run and 1 mile walk to benefit victims of August's fire in Hawaii. The Walk/Run for Maui fund-raiser will take place at Whitney's Farm on Ingalls Road (follow the dirt road past the U-Pick blueberries). Check in on Saturday, Sept. 16, will be at 7:30 a.m. The 5K trail run begins at 8:30, and the stroller-friendly 1 mile walk begins at 9:30. The cost to register is $20 in advance or $25 the day of registration. Kids 10 and under can walk or run for free.  GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. -- The 24th annual Monument Cup 3-on-3 soccer tournament returns on Sunday, Sept. 24, at Monument Mountain Regional High School. The event features boys and girls divisions in the under-10, under-12 and under-14 age groups. Teams of three to four players are guaranteed at least three matches. The top four teams in each division advance to the semifinals, with the championship matches played on the varsity field. Teams are encouraged to wear their own handmade, creative uniforms. Plans are to replace the dead tree on Main Street. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Tree Commission is getting things growing this year. The commission was reinstituted a couple of years ago after many dormant years. But it had a quite bit of a turnover in commissioners so it's taken until 2023 to find its groove. It planted 10 trees in late spring and early summer, including three at City Hall. This fall, it's got another 13 sitting at the city yard to put in, including replacing a dead tree on Main Street in front MountainOne Bank.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The School Committee on Tuesday voted with little discussion to change the school district's organization of instruction. The school district will have a prekindergarten through Grade 2 early education program and a Grades 3-6 upper elementary program and a Grades 7 through 12 middle and high school level. This was done in two votes as the organization of instruction had not been changed to reflect the move of the middle school to Drury High School nearly a decade ago. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The General Government Committee is recommending tiered annual fees for short-term rentals. Owner-occupied buildings would be charged $200 for registration per unit and initial inspection and then $200 annually for inspection per unit. All other buildings would be charged $350 per unit to register and $350 annually per unit for inspection. Mayor Jennifer Macksey had suggested a $500 fee to cover costs last month but said it was a starting point. She wanted to get some kind of fee in place so Inspection Services could begin registering and inspecting as required by the new short-term rental ordinance finally approved in February. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — On Aug. 24, Antonio Laboy, 26 of Springfield, was arrested during a traffic stop by the North Adams Police Department involving two vehicles. According to a report from the District Attorney's Office, the traffic stop was made on the grounds of an active investigation into drug trafficking in North County. The stops occurred on Church Street in North Adams, shortly after the vehicles crossed from Adams into North Adams. Laboy was a passenger in one of the vehicles at the time of the stop.
