 PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Brendan Merwin threw five innings on the mound and went 2-for-4 with a double at the plate Monday to lead the Pittsfield Babe Ruth 14-and-under All-Stars to an 8-3 win over Westfield and a Western Massachusetts State Championship. Pittsfield swept the best two-out-three series, 2-0, to carry the Western Mass banner into the New England Regional Championships, scheduled for next week in Newtown, Conn.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The former Kmart shopping plaza has changed hands again and the new owners are seeking tenants as "Parkade Plaza." The 127,626 square-foot retail center was sold on June 4 for $2.6 million to Guru Realty LLC of Mendon, with listed managers Nitant Raval of Mendon and Chirag Patel of Dalton. KeyPoint Partners of Burlington is handling property management and leasing, according to a press release received on Monday. Four kittens born at the shelter that will be up for adoption once they're old enough. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The nonprofit No Paws Left Behind animal shelter was overflowing visitors, balloons and donated supplies at Saturday's open house. North County's first animal shelter is operating out of the city's municipal shelter on Hodges Cross Road. "We're very excited for this to open," said Mayor Jennifer Macksey.  FALMOUTH, Mass. — Joseph Ponti served his country in the Coast Guard from 1961 to 1965, and was discharged as a lieutenant. He grew up in Lawrence and graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy as an ensign. His first assignment would take him aboard a weather ship, the USCG Casco. "We went on five-week patrols, carried meteorologists onboard and did search and rescue missions," he recalled. His other roles would include 1 1/2 years as a deck watch officer, six months as a student engineer as well as an engineering watch officer. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A North Adams man has been charged with murder after the death of a man he stabbed seven years ago. Travis T. Perras, 31, was indicted last week on a charge of first degree murder in the death of Charles Sauer of North Adams. He entered a plea of not guilty before Judge John Agostini on Thursday and was ordered held without bail. Perras pleaded guilty in 2018 of stabbing Sauer, then 51, the year before. Sauer worked for Domino's Pizza in North Adams and was delivering a pizza to a Union Street address called in by Perras on the night of July 14, 2017, when he was attacked and stabbed multiple times in an attempted robbery. 8 Comments
