Ham Radio Operators Will Be On the Air for National Field Day Drill

ADAMS, Mass. — This weekend, for 24 hours, more than 26,000 ham radio operators will be on the air in an annual exercise testing their abilities to keep a communications system up and running in an emergency.    Locally, up to 20 or so members of the Northern Berkshire Amateur Radio Club will be set up at the old airfield in Windsor to join the nationwide Field Day event.    "I feel it's very important because it lets the operator get to know their equipment better. It lets you run into real-world problems that could happen, like say if we had an emergency event, a radio goes down or an antenna breaks, things that we can do to fix them in the field,"

SVHC Honors the SVMC ICU Team with DAISY Team Award

BENNINGTON, Vt. — The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) team at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC), part of Southwestern Vermont Health Care (SVHC), was the recipient of the DAISY Team Award for Extraordinary Nurses in May.    The department was nominated in a heartfelt message from a patient recovering from an overdose.   The nominator wrote, "I would just like to sincerely thank all the staff on the floor for taking the best possible care of me. Individuals Indicted In North Adams Shooting and Clarksburg Homicide

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A grand jury returned indictments related to a shooting in North Adams on Feb. 19, which injured two people, and a murder in Clarksburg on Feb. 23.   Paul Starbird and Keith Larrabee, both of North Adams, were indicted in the shooting. Starbird, 20, and Larrabee, 27, are currently being held without the right to bail on District Court charges. The court arraigned Larrabee on Thursday and will arraign Starbird on June 29.   Starbird is facing two counts of armed assault with intent to murder and single counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, illegal possession of a firearm, and illegal possession of a loaded firearm. Warren, Neal Looking Into North Adams Flood Control Chutes

  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The city's congressional delegation is taking notice of the 70-year-old flood chutes that contain the Hoosic River.    U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren will be in North Adams on Friday afternoon to view the failing panels in the Willow Dell section and U.S. Rep. Richard Neal has a $200,000 earmark in a House appropriations bill for a study on upgrading the system.   The city has requested the U.S. Army Corps to conduct a feasibility study on this system.   The Hoosic River Basin Flood Control System was constructed in the 1940s and 1950s by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to prevent the destruction and loss of life in North Adams after

SVHC Summer Gala Raises Record Funds

BENNINGTON, Vt. — The Summer Gala—the Southwestern Vermont Health Care (SVHC) Foundation's signature fundraising event was held for the first time in two years on the evening of June 11 at the Hubbell Homestead in Bennington.    The event hosted more than 400 people and raised more than $450,000. This is the highest amount ever raised at an SVHC event, according to SVHC. St. Stan's Students Shown How to Fold American Flag

ADAMS, Mass. — Members of the American Legion Post 125 visited St. Stanislaus School recently to show students how to properly fold a special flag that was flown over the Capitol.   "It is a special flag," student Abbey Little said at the June 10 presentation.   Abbey said she and some classmates had attended the funeral for Officer William "Billy" Evans in 2021.   Evans, a member of the U.S. Capitol Police, was killed on April 2, 2021, when a driver slammed his car into a checkpoint he was guarding at the Capitol.
