Next week, we observe Independence Day, an opportunity to celebrate all the liberties we enjoy in this country. Of course, there are different types of freedoms – such as financial freedom, which can open the doors to many other opportunities. What steps can you take to gain your financial independence?   Here are a few suggestions: Save, invest … and repeat. There's really no shortcut to achieving financial freedom – you do have to save and invest for many years. And that means you should take full advantage of the opportunities available to you. SVMC Celebrates Accredited Nursing Residency Graduates

BENNINGTON, Vt. — Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC), part of Southwestern Vermont Health Care (SVHC), graduated eight nurses from its Transition-to-Practice Nurse Residency Program.    The program is the first program in the state and one of only 208 in the United States to have received accreditation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Practice Transition Accreditation Program for nurses working in the medical-surgical, women's and children's, and emergency departments. Accreditation for the intensive care unit is expected to be obtained later this year. Current students in the program joined the graduates in celebrating their

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Antonio Guerrero went 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and six RBIs Monday to lead the Valley Blue Sox to a 10-5 win over the SteepleCats at Joe Wolfe Field in New England Collegiate Baseball League action.   Jevon Mason went 4-for-4, and Sam Franco had a double, a triple and three RBIs for the Blue Sox, who improved to 11-7.   William Binder homered, and Cedric Rose doubled for the SteepleCats.   North Adams (4-14) goes to Bristol on Wednesday.

North Adams Airport Approves Funding for Hangar Renovation

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Airport Commission voted to use a total of $576,198 to begin work on the North East hangar renovation.    Stantec Engineer Peter Enzien gave an update on the project last Tuesday and noted not much has changed since May. He said Stantec has addressed and submitted comments from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in regard to the grant application.   What he did have was a general contractor bid of $479,000 from Tierney Construction. He said the commission had to make a decision on whether or not it wanted to move forward with renovating the city-owned hangar.    "It really just comes down to whether we are going forward or

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Ryan Galanie hit a game-tying double and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th Friday as the North Adams SteepleCats defeated Ocean State, 6-5.   Tyler Epstein went 3-for-4 and scored a run. Lynne Blake talks about her mother, a longtime secretary of the Friends of the North Adams Public Library. The reading room has new wallpaper, rugs and furniture thanks to a donation from Gooch's estate. SVHC COVID Resource Center Will Discontinue Testing

BENNINGTON, Vt. — As the number of COVID-19 cases continues to decrease and the supply of rapid antigen tests has stabilized, the need for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing has declined dramatically.   Federal funding for centralized testing has ceased. In addition, most workplaces and travel destinations no longer require PCR testing. As a result, SVHC will discontinue offering PCR tests at the CRC at noon on Friday, July 1.   Employees of Southwestern Vermont Health Care (SVHC) collected more than 110,000 COVID specimens at the COVID Resource Center (CRC) since January 2021.    "Our work to provide testing to the community was one of the greatest
