NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — There is a quiet dog at No Paws Left Behind looking for her forever home.
iBerkshire's Companion Corner is a weekly series spotlighting an animal in our local shelters that is ready to find a home.
Millie is over a year old and has been at the shelter for about a month. She was surrendered to the shelter after her previous owners had some family issues.
Executive Director Noelle Howland introduced us to Millie, who is quiet and likes to lay down.
"I wouldn't say she's too high energy, but she definitely has the capability of being pretty high energy at times. Overall in the kennel, she does fantastic. She really just curls up in her bed the entire time."
Millie has been very sweet to everyone and while she may jump on you to say hi, it's very gentle.
"She's been doing amazing here, without any issue, and she is very jumpy, so we are working on her being jumpy on people, but overall, she is the sweetest," said Howland. "She's very gentle, too, when she jumps on you, so she's not like overpowering, but she is very sweet and gentle, and pretty much loves anybody and anything."
Millie can go home with cats but might have to be the only dog in the home.
"We would prefer her to be the only dog in a home, just because she did live in a home with another dog. We always do, if I were to send her home another dog, it would be a male," she said. "Usually we would prefer her to be with an easy-going, docile male, not super high energy, because her energy, since she's not too high energy."
She does guard her food, which is why it might be best for there to be older children in case they try to snatch the food and if jumping might not be good for them.
"She did have a tendency in the previous home to be like she would guard food with another dog. So that's another reason with kids, we would rather than be older," Howland said. "She hasn't done any resource guarding with us, but we do think if she has something high value and a child were to grab something from her, it may be a different story, and that's another reason."
She would also do best with an active person who makes sure to take her out for walks, but could do great in an apartment.
"I think she would do really well if you had, like, an apartment. She's not really vocal, like fenced yard, of course, is always good. But I think if you were walking her a lot and you're active, she would be perfect," she said.
Millie also likes toys, although she will tear them up so you might need a few to keep her occupied. She also likes to be with you whether it's outside or in.
"She loves stuffed animals even though I mean, she will destroy them. She loves outdoors. We are working on her leash walking, but she loves being outside. We have a pen outside, so she likes playing in the pen. She definitely likes to lick your face and be in your face. So that's something that you'll have to be aware of and just kind of work on," Howland said.
Millie is working on her leash pulling and does chew the wall and her kennel but Howland says she doesn't think that will happen in a home as it might be an anxiety thing but is something to watch out for.
"She's pretty much such an easy dog that she'll be a great dog for somebody," she said.
