Lasell students at the student leadership awards in April.

Michael Maruk of Pittsfield, a student at Lasell University in Newton, was acknowledged at the institution's annual student leadership awards banquet in April. He received a Lasell Bowl, which is awarded to students who have made noteworthy contributions to campus life. In May, he received the Undergraduate Book Award in Communication given in recognition of a demonstrated commitment to excellence. Recipients are selected by faculty.

Emerson College student Esther Chilson of Lanesborough participated in a number of productions at the Boston college during the spring 2023 semester: "Cabaret" in April; NewFest: Short Works, a festival of short plays written, directed, and performed by students, in March, including "The Loyals" over March 30-April 2 at the Semel Theater. Chilson, a sophomore, is majoring in stage and production management.

Joseph Cracolici of Pittsfield has received the 2023 Beethoven Prize from College of the Holy Cross in Worcester. The prize is awarded to a fourth-year student for the best historical or analytical essay on music or an original composition.

Students at Lasell University in Newton presented original research, creative works, and academic presentations at the annual Connected Learning Symposium in April 2023.
 
Western New England University's Stageless Players produced the spring musical "Little Shop of Horrors" on March 31 and April 1-2. Connor Bryant of Pittsfield took on the role of puppeteer and Patrick Martin. Bryant is working toward a degree in computer science. Eva Myers of Pittsfield was costume coordinator; she is working toward a degree in creative writing.
 
Patrick McKinney of Pittsfield played Pippin in the Dean College production of "Pippin" in March. Studded with pop-style musical gems, "Pippin" is an allegory of a young prince in search of himself. 
 

Samantha Blau
Pittsfield resident Samantha Blau, a junior marketing communication/advertising major, is featured in the Western New England University's upcoming episode of "The College Tour," a series from Emmy-nominated producers Alex Boylan, Lisa Hennessy, and Burton Roberts, now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. The program travels the country, highlighting the diverse landscape of colleges and universities.
 
In her segment, Blau talks about how WNE taught her to fulfill herself as an artist, gain experience in planning and advertising an event, and land an internship at an event and talent booking agency.
 
"I get to customize my academic experience and indulge in my creativity while learning about entertainment and business from behind the curtain," she says.
 
 
Michael Maruk of Pittsfield hosted a table at the symposium about Lasell Community Television (LCTV), a student-run organization that offers students the ability gain experience in working with camera equipment, editing software, and screenwriting. Maruk also presented their communication capstone project, a demo and personality reel showcasing their work behind and in front of the camera. Maruk also presented work done by the 1851 Chronicle, Lasell's student-run newspaper, for which he was art director.
 
Spencer Villinski of Pittsfield presented the latest issue of Polished, Lasell's student-run and -produced fashion magazine. Villinski was an editor.
 
Students at Worcester Polytechnic Institute are required to complete a senior thesis as part of the university's project-based educational experience called the Major Qualifying Project (MQP), one that is usually team-based and often focuses on very specific issues or needs of an organization that has partnered with the university to sponsor the student's work. Local seniors completing their projects were:
  • Senior Samuel Parks of Berkshire, majoring in computer science, "Multi-Layered Control Flow Integrity in Web Applications."
  • Jacob Borowsky of Dalton, majoring in aerospace engineering, "Mitigating Boil-Off in Cryogenic Spacecraft Propellant Tanks."
  • Shane Donahue of East Otis, majoring in computer science, "Electric Conversion of a 1972 Triumph Spitfire."

Noah Perault is inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa.

Western New England University honor society chapters inducted two local students. Noah Perault of Dalton was welcomed into Beta Gamma Sigma National Honor Society on April 27. Beta Gamma Sigma is a national honor society for business majors at accredited schools. Perault was also welcomed into the Omicron Delta Kappa National Honor Society on May 4 at the university chapter's annual induction ceremony. Omicron Delta Kappa is a national leadership honor society that recognizes and encourages achievement in scholarship, athletics, campus or community service, social and religious activities, as well as campus government, journalism, speech and the mass media, and creative and performing arts.

Nicholas Whalen of Great Barrington was welcomed into Beta Alpha Psi National Honor Society on April 20. Beta Alpha Psi is an honorary organization for financial information students and professionals.

Spencer Villinski, a Lasell University fashion merchandising and management student from Pittsfield, attended the Coterie and MAGIC trade shows at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City. Villinski and their peers met with vendors and buyers as they detailed fashion lines for the Fall 2024 season, and studied upcoming trends, colors, and silhouettes. They also qualified at a regional DECA competition to advance to the International ICDC Conference in Orlando, Florida, this spring.
 
Villinski was one of 12 Lasell students to compete at a DECA. The entire Lasell cohort advanced to the ICDC finals in Orlando, where they will compete in areas including fashion merchandising, retail management, travel and hospitality, human resources, sales, and marketing management.
 

Graduations

 
More than 440 students graduated from College of Our Lady of the Elms in Chicopee during its 92nd commencement held on May 20 at the MassMutual Center in Springfield. The following local students earned degrees: Alexis Desroches of Adams and Christine Borrero and Allison Gage of Pittsfield, bachelors of arts in early care and education; Tyra Cannady, Rachael Fenn and Joanna Rivera, all of Pittsfield, bachelors of science in social work; and Alexandria Carmon and Madison Quinn of Pittsfield, bachelors of science in nursing.
 
Tufts University in Medford awarded more than 2,800 degrees across all schools during its ceremony commemorating the accomplishments of the class of 2023, including a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering to Maddie Albert of Hancock, summa cum laude.
 
 
Rochester (N.Y.) Institute of Technology conferred more than 4,800 degrees in May and featured remarks by Thomas Zurbuchen, astrophysicist and the longest continually serving associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate in NASA's history.
 
The following local residents received degrees: Maya Giron of Clarksburg received a bachelor of fine arts in photographic and imaging arts, Zachery Tatro of Clarksburg a bachelor of science degree in game design and development and Nick Schneider of Dalton a bachelor of science degree in chemistry .
 
Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I., award the following degrees to local students in May: Jamie Barthe of Adams, bachelor of science in engineering, with a specialization in mechanical; Mathew Fortin of Dalton, BS in engineering, with electrical specialization; Autumn Sheldon of Dalton, with a BS in criminal justice and Stephanie Schultz of Williamstown, with a bachelor of a bachelor of arts in aquaculture and aquarium science.
 
Western New England University in Springfield held its graduate commencement ceremony on May 21 with keynote speaker Thomas Lines, an entrepreneur, scientist, inventor, founder, and CEO of Quercis Pharma AG. Bachelor's degree were awarded May 20 with keynote speaker Jon Clifton, CEO of Gallup the global analytics and advice firm.
 
Receiving doctors of pharmacy degrees were Brittany A. Henault and Jillian D. Cote, both of Pittsfield, cum laude, and Laura Lynn Netti of North Adams, summa cum laude. Karen M. Kowalczyk of Lenox received a master of science in elder law and estate planning.
 
Receiving bachelors' of arts, science, business administration or engineering were: Caitlin Rose Tatro of Clarksburg, cum laude, biomedical engineering; Dylan P. Brownson of Egremont, magna cum laude, finance; Evan Blakeney Sheridan of Lanesborough, magna cum laude, secondary education/English; Daniel Wallace Buell of Hancock, magna cum laude, mechanical engineering; Connor P. Bryant of Pittsfield, cum laude, computer science, minor in business; Seyvon Ronald Kouao of Pittsfield, pharmaceutical business, and Drew Thomas Kendall of Windsor, mechanical engineering.
 
 
University of Vermont President Suresh Garimella conferred bachelor's degrees on an estimated 3,383 graduates at the Burlington university's 222nd commencement ceremony including the following local students: Jillian Artioli of Becket, animal sciences; Nathaniel Annand of Dalton, social work; Hannah Fletcher of Dalton, anthropology; Taylor Slonaker and Samantha Watson of Great Barrington, English; Aurora Maldonado of Housatonic, nutrition and food sciences; Georgia Hannock of Williamstown, Environmental Studies; Margo Smith of Williamstown, professional nursing; and Emma Shroyer of Pownal, computer Science.
 
 
 
Collin Frinks of Pittsfield, graduated from The University of Tampa in Florida on Saturday, May 6, with a bachelor of science in human performance.
 
Castleton (Vt.) University congratulates the graduates who were recognized during the 236th commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 13: Sara Woodie-Pacheco of Pownal, bachelor of science cum laude in nursing; Casey Meczywor of Adams, bachelor of science in physical education, and Courtney Munson of Pittsfield, Mass., bachelor of science cum laude in nursing.
 
Lisa Ann Cook of Dalton graduated from Campbellsville (Ky.) University on May 6.
 
Jaclyn Elizabeth Derwitsch was among the more than 7,000 candidates graduating from University of Georgia at Athens in May. Derwitsch, of Ashley Falls, earned a bachelor of science in biology.
 
Alegra Secor of Drury graduated cum laude with a bachelor of arts in double majors theater and psychology from Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa., on May 21. 
 
Clark University in Worcester awarded 590 bachelor's, 681 master's, and 29 doctoral degrees during its 119th commencement ceremonies on Sunday, May 21. Sarah Claire Trimarchi of Adams, earned a master of arts in community development and planning. Earning bachelor of arts degrees were: Emma Jiaoli Doane of Dalton, cum laude, geography; Dimitri P. Koufis of Great Barrington, cum laude, geography, high honors in studio art; Adam Tobias Cohen of Lanesborough, magna cum laude, political science; Sophia R. Joffe of New Marlborough, psychology; and Pittsfield residents Anna K. Dupont, cum laude, sociology; Shannon K. Dean, summa cum, laude political science; Caitlin H. Terpak, magna cum laude, marketing, and Jonathan Lim Halse, cum laude, political science.
 
Daisy Dominguez of Pittsfield graduated from the State University of New York at Delhi on May 13, 2023 with a associate in applied science in veterinary science technology. Dominguez was also named to the dean's list for the spring 2023 semester. 
 
Marion Huth of Pittsfield was among more than 4,555 students from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, who received degrees during the in-person spring commencement May 13, 2023. Huth graduated with a bachelor of arts degree, majoring in strategic communication.

Alixandra Borgert of Ashley Falls graduated from the University of Findlay (Ohio) with a master of business administration on May 6.
 
American International College in Springfield awarded degrees to 364 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students in 2023. Congratulations to these recent graduates, all of Pittsfield: doctor of physical therapy: Joseph Dewey;  bachelors of science: Salvador Amaral, Ava Bressette, Nicole Gamberoni and Mason Papirio; bachelor of arts: Javon Flynn; bachelor of science in nursing: Shannon Santos, and bachelor of science in business administration: Johnahyah Curry.
 
Katlyn Toomey of North Adams graduated from Plymouth (N.H.) State University during its 152nd anniversary commencement ceremony on May 12, 2023. Toomey graduated with a doctor of physical therapy.
 
Cameron Sabin of Williamstown graduated cum laude with a bachelor of science in commercial real estate finance from the College of Charleston, S.C. Sabin was among more than 1,400 bachelor's degree and master's degree candidates who participated in the iconic annual event in the college's historic Cistern Yard.
 
Rensselaer (N.Y.) Polytechnic Institute awarded a total of 1,988 degrees during commencement ceremonies on May 20 including Conner Noyes of Dalton, bachelor of science in mechanical engineering; Patricia Dooley of Great Barrington, bachelor of science in nuclear engineering; Samantha Trybus, of Lanesborough, bachelor of science in biochemistry and biophysics; Catherine Worthington of Pownal, Vt., bachelor of science in civil engineering; and Bruno Winterman of Pittsfield, a master of engineering in systems engineering and technology management
 

Holy Cross holds its 177th commencement in the DCU Center in Worcester.
More than 550 members of St. Lawrence University's class of 2023 took part in the university's commencement ceremonies on May 21, at Newell Field House in Canton, N.Y. They included Cameron Kessler of Pownal, Vt. who majored in computer science and neuroscience, and Brennan McGowan of Williamstown, who majored in environmental studies and attended Mount Greylock Regional High School.
 
Anika Pommers-Dear of Pittsfield was awarded a master of arts degree in international relations during Salve Regina University's 73rd commencement in Newport, R.I.
 
Holy Cross celebrated nearly 762 bachelor of arts degree, including to Joseph Cracolici of Pittsfield, magna cum laude, and Alison Howard of Williamstown, cum laude, at its 177th commencement held May 26 at the DCU Center in Worcester. Vermont U.S. Sen. Peter Welch, class of 1969, delivered the address. 
 
President Grace Wang and Board of Trustees Chair William Fitzgerald presided over Worcester Polytechnic Institute's 154th commencement exercises on May 13, awarding degrees including for computer science to Samuel Parks of Berkshire and Shane Donahue of East Otis, and in aerospace engineering to Jacob Borowsky of Dalton.

Mitchell Bath of Williamstown was named to the Milwaukee School of Engineering's dean's list with high honors for the 2023 spring quarter. Bath is pursuing a bachelor of science in computer engineering.

Caden Gidarakos of Great Barrington has been named to the spring 2023 dean's list at Stonehill College in Easton.
 
Clarkson University in Potsdam, N.Y., has named Brodie Lanoue of Adams and Noah Payne of Pownal, Vt., as Presidential Scholars for the spring 2023 semester, and Grace Haile Towler of North Adams, a junior majoring in electrical engineering, to the dean's list.

Mitchell Bath of Williamstown was named to the Milwaukee School of Engineering's dean's list with high honors for the 2023 Winter Quarter. Bath is pursuing a bachelor of science in computer engineering.
