MCLA Softball Earns League Sweep

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- MCLA's Lora Woyton tossed a shutout in game one and the Trailblazer offense pounded out 18 hits in the nightcap as the softball team picked up a pair of wins over Mass. Maritime on Saturday.
 
MCLA took game one 9-0 in five innings before completing the sweep with a 12-8 win in game two.
 
MCLA is now 5-24 on the season and 2-8 in league play. The Bucs fall to 7-23 overall and 0-10 in the MASCAC.
 
Game One
Woyton was the story in this one as she tossed all five innings and allowed just three hits. She struck out six Bucs on her way to the mercy rule victory.
 
Justina Pardi started the scoring with an RBI single that brought around Lidia Flores for an early 1-0 lead. Flores would add a two run single in the second to increase the margin to 3-0.  
 
Avianna Ibrahim added another run when she scored on a wild pitch in the third. In the fourth inning, MCLA's Ezmeralda Albright ripped a solo home run, her first as a Trailblazer, to make it 5-0. The Trailblazers would tack on two more runs as Maddie Teta and Flores each delivered RBI's. Flores ended a solid offensive day with two more RBI's in the fifth to close out the scoring.
 
Flores was 3-for-4 with a season best five RBIs in the win. Teta and Pardi each ended with two hits apiece.
 
Game Two
The MCLA offense showed out in game two.  The top of the MCLA lineup accounted for 13 of the teams 18 hits on the afternoon.  Flores continued her torrid hitting going 3-5 in the nightcap with another 5 RBI performance. Pardi and Ibrahim each had three hits while Teta and Woyton ended with two.
 
Woyton and Albright added RBIs early and when Flores drove home Teta in the third, MCLA led 3-0. Ibrahim added another run on a groundout to increase it to 4-0 before MMA rallied. They got a run back in the third, but MCLA's Flores answered with a two run single to make it 6-1 after three and a third innings.  
 
The Bucs added three tallies in the home fourth to make a game of it as they inched within 6-4. The teams traded runs in the fifth and then MCLA blew things open with two in the sixth and three in the seventh to hold off the Bucs.
 
Sarah Williams started off the mound for MCLA and went the first four innings. She allowed five hits and fine earned runs.  Ibrahim came on in relief and tossed the final three innings to secure the win. She struck out six Buccaneer batters.
 
MCLA is back at home on Monday when it hosts Westfield State.
 
BASEBALL
BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- The Trailblazers dropped the opener 10-1 before falling in the nightcap 6-0 at Mass Maritime.
 
MCLA is 10-19 overall and 1-11 in the MASCAC. The Bucs are 18-11 and remain atop the conference standings at 10-2.
 
Game One
In the opener, the Bucs started fast scoring seven times in the first inning. Trailblazer starter Nathan Kumm didn't make it out of the first inning as the Bucs batted around. Aidan Henderson started things off with a bases clearing triple down the left field line to make it 3-0. Three RBI singles increased the lead to 6-0 and the final run of the frame came across on a throwing error as the Bucs led 7-0.
 
They added a single tally in the second before MCLA got a run across in the third. Robinson Guerrero-Baez doubled home Austin Rachiele to cut the lead to 8-1.  
 
MMA tacked on insurance runs in the third and sixth innings as they cruised to a win.
 
MMA outhit MCLA 11-8 on the afternoon. AJ Pietrafesa, Brett Velzis, Henderson, and Tucker Leslie each had two hits. Maritime starter Brodey Tinkham went the distance allowing 8 hits and just one earned run.
 
Kumm suffered the loss for MCLA.
 
Game Two
Maritime's Hunter Dean was outstanding in the nightcap. He tossed all seven frames and allowed just three hits in recording the shutout victory.  He struck out six Trailblazers.
 
MMA got a pair of runs in the first off MCLA starter Nate Morse. Velzis recorded a sacrifice fly to start the scoring and Henderson doubled home Zach Sylvia to make it 2-0.
 
Sylvia added his own RBI double an inning later and when Pietrafesa followed suit, it was 4-0. The Bucs tacked on solo runs in the fifth and sixth frames to close out the scoring.
 
Sylvia and AJ Luciano each ended with a pair of hits to pace the MMA attack.
 
Morse went five innings for MCLA scattering 8 hits and allowing four earned runs.
 
MEN'S LACROSSE
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- MCLA's Nathan Haley scored eight goals for the second straight contest as he led the Trailblazer men's lacrosse team to a 15-9 win over Thomas this afternoon at Shewcraft Field.
 
The match was the season finale for the Trailblazers as they end the campaign with a mark of 4-9 overall and 3-5 in the conference. Thomas ends their season at 2-10 and 2-6.
 
Hoosac Valley graduate Haley was coming off an eight-goal performance just 48 hours ago at Lyndon. It took him awhile to get started this afternoon, but once he got going the Terriers had no answer.
 
A low scoring first quarter saw MCLA hold a 2-1 lead when John Hankel and Tom Irwin tallied in the final two minutes. In the second quarter, Matthew Wallace converted before Haley finally got on the board to increase the margin to 4-1. Thomas added a power play goal to get within 4-2, but MCLA answered with five straight goals to end the quarter and take a 9-2 lead into halftime. Haley added two more markers in the run.
 
Thomas climbed to within 10-5 in the third quarter but Haley scoreed three straight goals for the Trailblazers to take command and lead 13-5 heading to the final quarter. Thomas outscored MCLA 4-2 in the fourth quarter, however the Trailblazers comfortably cruised home to grab the win.
 
Haley took 18 shots on the afternoon and added 4 groundballs and caused turnovers. Wallace, Hankel, and Johnny Hebert each added two goals.  Nate Allen paced all players with 11 groundballs in the win.  
 
Boden Dock earned his third win in goal collecting 16 saves along the way.
 
Thomas was paced by Matthew Crisco's three goal performance. Max Irons added two for the Terriers.  
 
Prior to the start of the game, MCLA honored their three seniors. Playing their final home games this afternoon were Tom Irwin, Sam Edge, and Micah Tassone.
