John B. Howland Jr., 63

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — John Benjamin Howland Jr., 63, of 47 Foucher Ave. died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Death followed a long illness.
Born in North Adams on June 11, 1948, a son of John B. Howland Sr. and Mary Jones Howland, he graduated from McCann Technical School in 1966 with the first class to complete four years at the school.
A decorated Army veteran, he served during the Vietnam War.
Mr. Howland was last employed at the former GE in Pittsfield as an manager. He also had worked at the former Menty's in Adams for several years.
He was a member of First Baptist Church and Dr. George L. Curran VFW Post 996, and a life member of the Greylock Community Club.
He and his wife, the former Nancy Valotta, were married Dec. 28, 1968, in North Adams.
Besides his loving wife of 42 years, he leaves three sons, John B. Howland III and his wife, Bonnie, of Clarksburg and Shaun J. Howland and Jason E. Howland and his wife, Jennifer, all of North Adams; three daughters, Melissa Eastland and her husband, Thomas, Kelly Bordeau and Angela Macdonald and her husband, Scott, all of North Adams; three brothers, Steven Howland of the town of Florida, Wayne Howland of North Adams and Kirk Howland of Boston, and 17 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Baribeau, in 1994.
FUNERAL NOTICE — Funeral services for Mr. Howland will take place Monday, Aug. 22, at noon at First Baptist Church of North Adams. Burial will follow with full military honors in Southview Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Sunday, Aug. 21, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Memorial donations are suggested for VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire or the North Adams First Baptist Church through the funeral home.

I have much love in my heart for the howland family. I have very fond memories of john from my teenage years spent with the howlands. I've always admired how close knit a family they are. they have lost a well loved member and it is a very sad time. I know that God will see them through along with the love and support of their incredible family and network of friends. I am honored to have known john and felt the closeness of the howland family.may God continue to bless you all and support you in these trying times. much love and sympathy,
