NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Rita M. Garand, 91, of 44 Gallup St. died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, at home.
Born in North Adams on Oct. 6, 1917, daughter of Wilfred and Lucy Lefebvre Lavigne, she attended schools in North Adams, completing the commercial course at the former Notre Dame School.
Mrs. Garand was employed by the Hugo DeFalco Insurance Agency for about 15 years. She also had worked at the former First Agricultural Bank and at North Adams Regional Hospital.
She was a communicant of the former Notre Dame Church.
Her husband, Henri L. Garand, whom she married June 28, 1937, died on June 8, 1988.
She leaves include a son, Bernard F. Garand of North Adams; a daughter, Jacqueline P. Armstrong of Houston; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild, several nieces and a nephew.
She was predeceased by two other sons and another daughter, Roger Garand, John Garand and Jeanne Brzezinski, and a sister, Aurore Wood.
FUNERAL NOTICE — A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mrs. Garand will be celebrated Friday, Jan. 16, at 11 at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, formerly St. Anthony's Church. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery in Williamstown. Calling hours at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, will be Friday morning from 9 to 10:30. Memorial donations may be made to VNA & Hospice of North Berkshire in care of the funeral home.
