Frederick Joseph LaVigne, 86, of 96 Cherry St. died Saturday at home.
Born in North Adams on Oct. 15, 1920, son of John B. and Julia Andrews LaVigne, he attended the former Mark Hopkins, the former St. Joseph's Elementary and the former St. Joseph's High schools.
An Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he served as a corporal in the European theater with the 9th Air Force in England, France and Germany and was responsible for installing integral bomb releases in P-47-type aircraft.
He was employed by General Electric Co. in the power transformer division for 33 years, retiring in 1982. Before that, he was employed by Little Frank's Auto Store on Eagle Street, the former Hoosac Cotton Mill and the former H.W. Clark Biscuit Co., as well as by several roofing companies in Northern Berkshire. While living in New Jersey, he was employed by American Type Founders and Simmons Bed Co. in Elizabeth until the outbreak of World War II.
Mr. LaVigne was a communicant of St. Francis' Church and a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs.
He was a member of Frank R. Stiles Post 125 American Legion, Greylock Community Club and Northern Berkshire Retired Men's Club. He enjoyed playing golf and cards, bowling and dancing with his wife. He liked to tinker and fix things and collected golf balls.
He and his wife, the former Rita Bernadette Cavey, would have celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary April 29. They were married at St. Francis' Church in Bennington, Vt.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, John Charles LaVigne of Medford; two daughters, Carol Ann Lavigne-Kane of Seattle and Jean Marie LaVigne of North Adams; a sister, Teresa Malloy of Albany, N.Y.; a brother, Arthur LaVigne of Rahway, N.J.; and three grandchildren.
Another son, Paul Francis LaVigne, died April 22, 1993.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service to celebrate the life of Frederick Joseph LaVigne will take place Thursday at 6 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI HOME FOR FUNERALS, CENTRAL CHAPEL, 74 Marshall St., North Adams. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 to 6 at the funeral home.
Burial will take place at a later date in the family plot in Southview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire through the funeral home.
He also leaves a daughter-in-law, Jane, and three grandchildren, Janelle, Juliette and Jessica LaVigne. He was predeceased by five brothers, Samuel, Joseph, Francis, Edward and John LaVigne, and by three sisters, Flora Mosher, Mary Harvey and Eugena LaVigne.
