Joan Lillian Crofts Chenail

Joan Lillian Crofts Chenail, 75, of 1378 Massachusetts Ave. died Saturday morning at her home.

Born in North Adams on Aug. 2, 1930, daughter of Thomas Hicks and Lillian Gregory Crofts, she attended North Adams schools, including the former Freeman School, graduating from Drury High School in 1948. She graduated from North Adams State Teacher's College in 1952.

Mrs. Chenail taught second grade at the Greylock School from the time of its construction, retiring in 1993. Previously, she had been a teacher at the Brayton School.

She was a communicant of the former Incarnation Church. She was a member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association. She was an avid reader, enjoyed crossword puzzles, and she loved cats.

She was the wife of Ronald Joseph Chenail Sr., whom she married on Oct. 9, 1954, at St. Francis' Church. He died on Nov. 17, 1980.

She leaves a daughter, Suzanne J. Brewer, of Saranac Lake, N.Y., two sons, Ronald J. Chenail Jr., of Plantation, Fla., and Peter M. Chenail of North Adams, and nine grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Joan Chenail, who died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Saturday, March 11, 2006, will be Tuesday, March 14, at 10:15 a.m. at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPELS, 521 West Main St., followed by a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Francis Church celebrated by the Rev. William F. Cyr, pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow in Southview cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. Donations should be made to VNA-Hospice of North Berkshire or to the Caleb Jacobbe Fund in care of the funeral home. Mrs. Chenail also leaves a son-in-law, Steven; two daughters-in-law, Jan and Catherine, and nine grandchildren, Heather, Jason, Amanda, and Michael Brewer, Michelle Stone, George Hernandez, Sarah, Alicia, and Christian Chenail.
