Hazel M. Newport, 93, of Mohawk Drive, Tribes Hill, N.Y., died yesterday morning at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness.
She was the mother of Douglas C. Newport of North Adams.
Born in Batavia, N.Y., on Feb. 13, 1912, daughter of Herman and Hazel Sharon Fones, she was educated there.
Mrs. Newport was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Fonda Reformed Church where she taught Sunday school for many years.
Recently she attended Tribes Hill Presbyterian Church.
Her husband, Edward Charles Newport, whom she married Nov. 17, 1933, died Feb. 8, 1988.
Besides her son, she leaves a sister, Anita Countermine of Tribes Hill, with whom she resided, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Hazel M. Newport will be Friday at 11 at the BETZ, ROSSI & BELLINGER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, N.Y. The Rev. Richard Countermine, her nephew, will officiate. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the Tribes Hill Volunteer Fire Dept. in care of the funeral home. The family's guest book may be signed at www.brbsfuneral.com.
She also leaves her daughter-in-law, Mariellen; grandchildren, Mark Newport, Michael Newport and Julie Reilly, and five great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Amanda, Andrew, Chloe and Zachary.
