William E. "Jerry" Mills

William E. "Jerry" Mills, 73, of 116 Autumn Drive died Saturday, at Williamstown Commons, where he was admitted March 30.

Born in South Acton on March 8, 1931, son of Charles and Zeta Proctor Mills, his family moved to Williamstown in 1943. He graduated in 1949 from the former Williamstown High School, where he played on the varsity football, baseball and bowling teams.

He was a longtime resident of Summer Street in Williamstown.

An Army veteran of the Korean War, he enlisted in April 1951 and served as a sergeant with the 24th Division, 3rd Combat Engineers. He received several campaign medals, including a service medal commemorating the 50th anniversary of the war, and was honorably discharged in 1953.

Mr. Mills was employed for 31 years as kitchen manager and chef at the former Howard Johnson's Restaurant in Williamstown, then by Williams College as a first cook for 15 years, retiring in 1995. He continued working part time until his health forced him to quit.

He was a member of William Lodge of Masons AF&AM, VFW Post 8304 and Richard A. Ruether American Legion Post 152, all in Williamstown. He was a life member of Disabled American Veterans Post 15 in Pittsfield.

He leaves his wife, the former Bonnie J. Krull, whom he married Nov. 25, 1961, in St. Francis' Church.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Private services for William E. "Jerry" Mills, who died May 1, 2004, will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.

Memorial donations are suggested for the Berkshire County Humane Society animal shelter in Pittsfield through FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, which is in charge of arrangements.

He also leaves his sister-in-law, Audrey Giroux, and his niece and nephew, Deborah Wetherell and Hunter Giroux. He was predeceased by a sister, Arlene Hill, and by two brothers, Charles and John Mills.
