Stuart Irving Pead

Stuart Irving Pead, 80, formerly of 72 Hathaway St., died yesterday at the East Longmeadow Health Care Center, where he had been admitted in 1997.

Born in North Adams on June 1, 1923, son of Ernest D. and Ora J. Myers Pead, he was a 1941 graduate of Drury High School. He later earned a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of South Carolina in 1947.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

He was last employed by the former Sprague Electric Co., retiring in 1984 as a facilities engineer after 33 years of service. He was also a registered locksmith.

Mr. Pead was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church, where he served on the Vestry and was a member of the choir.

He had also been a member of several area community choirs throughout the years, since the age of 4.

He served on the Zoning Board of Appeals from 1966 to 1984, and had been a member of the Lafayette-Greylock Lodge of Masons AF & AM since 1950.

His wife, the former Marjorie G. Stockwell, whom he married July 8, 1950, died Nov. 4, 1991.

He leaves a son, Ernest F. Pead of Hinsdale, N.Y.; two daughters, Linda A. Pead of Oak Island, N.C., and Carol A. Bright of Greensboro, N.C.; two brothers, Ernest "Donald" Pead of Pacifica, Calif., and Charles M. Pead of Bradenton, Fla., three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Stuart Pead will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 1, 2004, in St. John's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Bruce Duncan, ret., will officiate.

Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours will be today, Friday, from 5 to 7 at the AUGE-SAN SOUCIE-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to either the Alzheimer's Association or Bay State VNA & Hospice, Springfield, through the funeral home, 46 North Church St., North Adams, MA 01247.
