Rev. David Whitlingum Ramsammy

The Rev. David Whitlingum Ramsammy, 86, of 150 Ashland St. died Friday afternoon at Williamstown Commons, where he had resided for a few months.

Born in Berbic, Republic of Guyana, on Aug. 31, 1917, son of Ramsammy and Applama Birage Ramsammy, he attended schools there. He also completed his studies at the Theological School of the Republic of Guyana.

Following his studies, he became pastor of St. James’ Lutheran Church in Whim Village in the Republic of Guyana, where he served for eight years. Before that, he was a tailor and served an apprenticeship in Guyana.

He moved to England in 1982 and to the United States a year later, settling in North Adams.

Mr. Ramsammy served as deacon at First Baptist Church in North Adams and assisted in preaching.

His wife, the former Kadir Bee Bappu, whom he married Feb. 23, 1936, died May 26, 2001.

He leaves two daughters, Glorin Ramsammy of Melbourne, Fla., and Esther Welch of London; four sons, Lawrence Whitlingum of Cambridge, England, Joseph Whitlingum of Adams, Harris Whitlingum and Leonard Whitlingum, both of North Adams; 17 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for the Rev. David Whitlingum Ramsammy will be Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, at 10:15 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, followed by services at 11 at First Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Joseph DeCosta, pastor.

Donations may be made to the VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire or to First Baptist Church, both in care of the funeral home. Survivors include nieces and nephews. Two brothers are deceased, Naga Mooto Ramsammy and Chin Ramsammy. He enjoyed helping people in time of need.
