Robert George Perry

Retired Public Safety Commissioner Robert George Perry, 68, of 1428 Massachusetts Ave. died Friday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, where he was admitted Thursday.

Born in North Adams on Feb. 7, 1934, son of Clara A. Bardsley Perry and the late Carleton Ellsworth Perry, he was a 1952 graduate of Drury High School.

He served in the Marine Corps from 1954 to 1957 with Maintenance Service Company of the 2nd Service Regiment, 2nd Marine Division.

Following his discharge, Mr. Perry returned to North Adams and was employed by the former Sprague Electric Co.

He was appointed a reserve officer with the North Adams Police Department in 1962 and a permanent officer in 1966. He rose through the ranks and was a juvenile affairs officer until 1978, when he was promoted to detective.

In 1984, Mr. Perry was appointed fire director. Mayor John Barrett III appointed him to the position of public safety commissioner in 1991. He retired in August 1996 with more than 34 years of service to the city.

He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Adams and American Legion Post 125. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He and his wife, the former Bonnie Lynn Bryce, were married April 2, 1993, in St. Mark's Episcopal Church.

Besides his wife and mother, of North Adams, he leaves a daughter, Sharon L. Perry of North Adams; a son, Keith R. Perry of Albany, N.Y.; a stepson, Robert B. Costine of Stamford, Vt.; a sister, Cheryl A. Costine of North Adams, and two grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for retired North Adams Public Safety Commissioner Robert G. Perry will be Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at 11 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. The Rev. Michael E. McCue, rector of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Adams, will officiate.

Burial will be in Southview Cemetery, North Adams. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Tuesday, Nov. 12, from 4 to 7. Memorial donations are suggested for new client chairs at BMC Dialysis Center.

Survivors include his mother, Clara A. Bardsley Perry; wife, Bonnie Lynn Bryce Perry; daughter, Sharon L. Perry; sister, Cheryl A. Costine; granddaughter, Tre A. Amos, and nephew, Ryan P. Costine, all of North Adams; son, Keith R. Perry of Albany, N.Y.; grandson, Robert C. Costine, and stepson, Robert B. Costine of Stamford, Vt.
