Edward Konopka

Edward J. Konopka, 96, of 154 Kemp Ave. died Saturday evening at Williamstown Commons, where he was admitted Nov. 3, 2001. He served as a city councilor from 1960 to 1968.

Born in Adams on July 28, 1905, son of William and Mary Henscer Konopka, he moved to North Adams as a child and attended schools there.

Mr. Konopka was employed by the former Hoosac Cotton Mill as a welder for 50 years and worked as a custodian for the city of North Adams for three years.

He was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church and the Lafayette-Greylock Lodge of Masons, AF&AM. He was an accomplished musician and played the saxophone and clarinet for many years in local bands.

His wife, the former Esther May Wright, whom he married Oct. 26, 1925, died June 4, 1990.

He leaves two sons, Edward J. Konopka Jr. and Wallace E. Konopka, both of North Adams; five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his siblings Frank, Walter, Andrew and Earnest Konopka, Della Bissaillon and Helen Niemiec, and a grandson, Stephen W. Konopka.

The funeral will be Tuesday at 9 at AUGE-SAN SOUCIE-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME, North Adams. The Rev. Susan Stewart, pastor of First United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery, North Adams. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in his memory be made to First United Methodist Church through the funeral home, 46 North Church St., North Adams, MA 01247.
