Martin Flanagan

Dr. Martin E. Flanagan, 73, of Nokomis, Fla., formerly of North Adams, died May 8 at home.

Born in Philadelphia on May 23, 1928, son of James and Mary Flanagan, he moved to North Adams in 1940 and graduated from Drury High School. He also graduated from the premed program at St. Michael's College in Winooski, Vt., in 1952, and received his medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine in 1956.

He interned at the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont, including a year of study at the Lahey Clinic in Boston, and completed a five-year residency in neurosurgery there. He also did a year of training in a specialized branch of stereotactic neurosurgery at Temple University in Philadelphia.

In 1961, Dr. Flanagan won the Vermont J.C. Outstanding Achievement Award. In 1962, he joined the faculty at the University of Vermont and advanced to the rank of professor. He was in medical practice from 1964 until his retirement in 1995.

He leaves his wife, Barbara Flanagan of Nokomis; a daughter, Melissa Flanagan of Rutland, Vt.; a son, Michael Flanagan of Oneida, N.Y.; a stepdaughter, Casey MacTavish of Sarasota, Fla.; a brother, James Flanagan of North Adams; a sister, Ann King of Williamstown; a granddaughter, and a step-grandson.

A small private family service will be held Monday, June 3, in North Adams. Contributions may be made to the Benvenuti Scholarship Fund in care of the Superintendent of Schools, North Adams, MA 01247.
