Robert A. Davis, 70

June 30, 2025

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. —  Robert Anthony Davis, 70, of North Adams, journeyed Home to be with our Lord in Heaven on June 30, 2025 at Baystate Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. Born on October 13, 1954, in North Adams, MA, Bob happily lived there his entire life. Bob grew up on Bracewell Ave., and graduated from McCann Technical High School in 1973. The first 20 years of his career were spent as an electrician at General Electric, where he honed his trade and made many lifelong friends. He loved his Alma Mater so much that he returned to teach Electricity there for over 20 years. In 1979, Bob married his wife, Pauline Gertje. They lived together on State Street for 40 years where they raised their family. As a faithful landlord to many, Bob could easily be found renovating an apartment, mowing a lawn, or just visiting with his tenants, whom he treated like family. He was also the “Unofficial Ambassador” of the Annual Fall Foliage Festival Parade as he stood on his balcony, cheering and waving to everyone which was met with non-stop gleeful shouts of “Hey, Bubba!” and “Hi, Mr. Davis!”.

Bob loved his community and was involved in countless programs including earning his Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts, co-founding the local Catholic Youth Organization, President of The Lebanese American Social Club, an avid member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles serving as President, Chaplain, and Trustee, Vice President of the Northern Berkshire Community Television Corporation, and as a member of the Mass MoCA Cultural Development Commission. Similar to his beloved mother, Shirley Davis, Bob believed in giving back, helping where needed, and loved to socialize with all of his friends in town.

Bob was a consummate Middle Eastern musician, specializing in the Oud. He played in orchestras, ensembles, and bands including the Cedars, the Zay-Tunes, the Williams College Middle Eastern Music Ensemble, and the Pioneer Valley Arabic Music Ensemble. He played at colleges, weddings, festivals, reunions, and each summer joined the Arabic Music Retreat. His retirement allowed him to expand his musical endeavors and share his passion through teaching and playing music at every opportunity.

Bob was a devout Catholic and was a communicant of the former St. Francis of Assisi Church and more recently of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish. The example of Jesus’ kindness and love shaped the way Bob lived out his faith. Bob was an altar boy, lector, and eucharistic minister. Bob taught religious education for more than 50 years sharing his faith and love of God with so many young people.

Above all, Bob loved his family. He enjoyed cooking, especially his famous “Jiddu Eggs,” giving music lessons, teaching his grandchildren to fly on his flight simulator, playing chess, and spoiling them at Disney World. He leaves his wife, Pauline Davis of 45 years. He was a father to Angela Park (Adam), Melissa Marchetti (Michael), and Matthew Davis (Amanda) and Jiddu to Evan, Penelope, Annabelle, Gwendolyn, Noah, Delilah, and Caleb. He leaves Joel Alvarado and Emily Alvarado whom he considered immediate family. Bob leaves his brother, James Davis (Tammy) and sisters Barbara Hassan (Kenneth) and Susan Davis, his mother-in-law, Inna Gertje, as well as numerous beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and extended family. Bob was preceded in death by his parents Louis and Shirley Davis, and his sister, Judith Davis.

Calling hours for Robert Davis will be held on Wednesday, July 9, 2025 at the Flynn & Dagnoli Funeral Home – West Chapels from 3:00 PM-7:00 PM. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, July 10, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Cheshire, MA. Immediately following the Funeral Liturgy, the family cordially invites all to attend a reception to continue the celebration of Bob’s life at the Bounti-Fare Restaurant. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Robert Anthony Davis Memorial Scholarship through Flynn & Dagnoli Funeral Home. Barb, Sue and Jim,
I was so sad to see that Bob passed away. He and I go back a long way...I used to enjoy seeing him in the electrical shop at McCann when I'd bring prospective Greylock student for a tour. He was a great teacher and a wonderful guy.
Please accept my most sincere condolences.

I second everything in my brother Rich's beautiful tribute. Bobby is my first cousin, but he’s really a brother to me. I too called him several times over the years with electrical questions. In the 80s Bobby asked me if I could put some guitar cords behind his incredible singing and “oud" playing. He helped me come up with guitar parts for so many of his songs. It provided a soft background, which gave the music a full sound. With our brother’s Rich and Jimmy on the middle-eastern drums (derbeke), we played at many Lebanese-American events throughout New England. I remember all of the chords, and I hope to accompany Bobby again someday. To this day, those fun times, along with Thanksgiving every year at Aunt Shirley’s and the Davis (touch football) Bowl, are some of my greatest memories.

To Pauline and all of my cousins. I’m so sorry for your loss. I’m sending good thoughts your way from Florida. I miss you all.

Pauline, Suzie, Barb, Jimmy and families:

My wife, Kathy and I are heartbroken over Bobby’s death. Bobby was such a central part of our extended family and I will miss him greatly.

Throughout our younger lives, we celebrated all our holidays together. And since then I can not get through a Thanksgiving without thinking about all the laughter, love, and amazing food we shared. I always reminisce about our “famed” Thanksgiving Davis Bowl football game where Bobby and I would play against the two Jimmy’s. With Bobby on my team we were bound to win!

Our family events had a musical component always including Bobby’s amazing talent. I remember playing Arabic music with Bobby at the annual music and food festivals in MA, CT and VT.. I still chuckle at the fact that Bobby would sing songs in Arabic without knowing exactly what the words meant! I have always been in awe of Bobby’s oud skills, first learning from his dad, my Uncle Louie, and then went on to become one of the best if not THE best player in the US. It meant so much to Kathy and I that we Davis cousins played Arabic music at our wedding, including Bobby’s oud playing.

I also have fond memories of other times with Bobby including taking him skiing for the first time in our early to mid 20s. He learned quickly and mastered snow plowing while all the time laughing and having the best of times.

Bobby was always in a good mood and up for some fun. But he was one of the most responsible among us, a community leader, responsive landlord, loving father and grandfather, a family man who was always ready to help. He was a guru in electricity and wiring and even though I had a degree in electrical engineering I always sought out his advice rather than rely on myself.

Not a day will go by when when I don’t miss my dear cousin, and friend, Bob Davis.

Dear Pauline and Family, although we all rejoice that Bob is with his Lord and Savior, we know your hearts are broken and we share your pain. We are all lifting the entire family up in prayer at this incredibly difficult time. Personally, I have lost a spiritual brother in the Lord, a dear close friend, and a devoted, energetic, and visionary NBCTC colleague. He touched countless lives in an upbeat and often humorous way in multiple sectors of society, including, but not limited to his church, public education, heritage inspired music, community service, and community media.

Big Bob, as I always called him, was unique, truly one of a kind, and an unforgettable, bigger-than-life person. There is a void which cannot be filled.

Due to his faith, not his many accomplishments, Bob is with the Lord he loved, in bliss, joy, perfection, delight, and peace that we cannot even comprehend. We pray you will be comforted by this fact. Big Bob would want us all to go on with vigor and with the commitment to excellence he demonstrated every day.

God bless you all,

Bill and Janice Wilson

Bubba is rockin the oud in the presence of the God who placed him on this earth for 70 years. He fulfilled his mission. And for those who had the privilege of meeting Bob, you met the “visible image of the invisible God.” He lived his faith and God squeezed him until he ran on empty. He always knew where he was going the minute he had no more to give to this world. Thank you Bubba for the selfless, unconditional love that you shared with everyone. Thank you for the music, for being a witness to you faith, and for being an incredible role model for the youth of the Berkshires. Your legacy is solidified through your children, grandchildren and the young people you molded and shaped throughout your lifetime.
Om Shanti,
