Carey Dassatti, 71

November 03, 2024

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. —  Carey Emil Dassatti passed away the morning of November 3, 2024, surrounded by love and family at the age of 71. He was born on April 1, 1953 to Erminio “Ernie” and Elizabeth “Mary” (Maroni) Dassatti in North Adams, MA. He attended Drury High School, where he starred on the football, basketball, and track teams, and graduated in 1971. He went on to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees and was a brother of the Chi Phi fraternity and star forward on the basketball team.

After living in Bennington, VT and Stamford, CT, he met Peggy Whelan and moved to New York, and the two married on November 17, 1984. Together they raised three children in a home full of love and laughter in Barrington, IL. Carey worked a long and decorated career building and leading teams and organizations in Human Resources, including 25 years at Motorola in and around Chicago, and 6 at Dawn Foods in Jackson, MI. His love of sports led him to become an avid golfer, a hobby he supported by eventually retiring to Cape Coral, FL, and becoming an active member of the Cape Royal Golf Club. As an April Fools Baby, he was ready with a joke all the way to his last moments, filling every space he occupied with laughter at every opportunity. And as a loving family man, he was excited to become a grandfather to his first grandchild, expected in January.

He is survived by his children: Griffin (Jessica), Mac, and Reagan Dassatti; his former wife, Peggy Dassatti; and his siblings: Ed (Mary Ellen), Mary Ann (Eric Gross) Dassatti, and Richard “Dick” (Sheila); his sister-in-law: Tracy Dassatti; one aunt Mrs. Henry (Marie) Maroni; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ernie and Mary, and his brother, Bob.

Celebrations of his life will take place in Chicago, Il., Cape Coral Fl,. and in North Adams, Ma.. The North Adams celebration will take place on Saturday, May 3, 2025 at 11:00 AM at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPEL, 521 West Main St. North Adams, MA.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Carey’s name to the Lou and Jean Malnati Brain Tumor Institute at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, or giving blood at your local blood bank. To add to the Book of Memories, please visit www.flynndagnolifuneralhomes.com

Ed, Dick, all the Dassatti's . Sorry to hear of Cary's passing . Cary was respected and loved by many.
He was a year behind me in School, and as an incoming Freshman, Herb Johnson lined him up to box me in our Boxing Phys Ed class. . I 'd like to think we fought to a Draw.
Basketball team mate for a few years . Glad he, and all, took the 1971 Western Mass Large School Championship.

I can’t even put into words what Carey, his family, and our friends, and all of those that were in any way a part of his life are feeling. He was so much more. I have so very many memories of times shared. There was a visit to spend time with him at RPI. There was my mom on his visit to our home saying as he ducked through the doorways, ”wow he’s tall.“ There was a one on one at Haskins court when he dunked on me because he said he had to play guard in college. There were so many times sharing blood, sweat, and tears representing our perseverance on the basketball court. Whether on or off the court he was stellar. He will be deeply missed as a friend, contemporary, scholar, and teammate. My heart goes out to Carey’s family. Anyone that had the opportunity to know him and share in his life in any way were truly blessed.

I don't think there ever was a better athlete that came out of North Adams than Cary. Unfortunately, i was never on one of his teams which meant i usually was defeated by his competitiveness. Cary would have been All Berkshire as a catcher in baseball if he elected baseball over track. Just an amazing athlete! But that pales in comparison to the type of man he was. Always humble and kind with that warm smile he had every time he approached you to shake your hand to say hi. I'm sad today but how lucky are we all to have had Cary in our lives. God bless him, his wonderful family, and all the rest of us who can say we loved him.

Oh the so many memories of our high school days with rooting for our teams! Sitting in the auditorium with the girls waiting for the boys and all in school sports gear or cheerleading outfits! It was so much fun! It's easy to visualize the days we shared. I am so glad you had a wonderful life full of children and special times. May you rest in peace thinking of all we shared in our small town.

Dear family of Carey, Indeed all of the class of 71 cherish the memories of celebrating Carey as an athlete and the unity we shared. Yet, I feel we were even more blessed in his example of humility, and leading with grace and humor. I am saddened by his passing. May all of you find peace inn my these remembrances.

Dick and siblings, so sorry for your loss. My dad was a huge fan of Carey (and all the Dassatti’s) on the basketball court. When I crashed Carey’s Drury reunion a few years ago, he was so nice to me even though I wasn’t supposed to be there. I know how hard it is to lose a sibling. Thinking of you.
from: Paulette Weinon: 11-10-2024

My condolences to the Dassatti family. I have great memories as Carey’s teammate playing Drury basketball. Never forgot that 1971 western Mass class “L” championship game when we beat heavily favored Holyoke in overtime earning a trip to play in the state championship tournament at the old Boston Garden. Carey was a natural leader. RIP Captain

It was great seeing you at the last reunion. I enjoyed talking and remembering the good times at Drury. You always said a pleasant word to everyone. Your basketball career was awesome and I enjoyed going to the games watching the team play.
RIP and you will be missed at the next reunion on earth but will meet you for the reunion in heaven. Say hi to our fellow classmates for us hear.
Prayers and condolences to you family.

Memories are flooding back to when we went undefeated 23 - 0 to win the 1970 Northern Berkshire basketball league. We had such great chemistry and camaraderie and became close friends. The bond between us was formed that summer playing basketball every night till the lights went out at 10 at Haskins School. My deepest sympathy and condolences to the family..
