NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Dorothy Jeanne Damiano, 86, of Rensselaer, N.Y. and formerly of North Adams, died Tuesday, July 28, 2015, at her home.
Born in North Adams on Aug. 14, 1928, daughter of Patrick and Angelina Irace Laino, she graduated from the Drury High School and completed her nursing degree from the former St. Luke's School of Nursing in Pittsfield. She also attended Russell Sage College.
A registered nurse, Ms. Damiano was last employed as director of the day treatment center at the Albany Stratton Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where she worked for 25 years until her retirement. Before that, she worked at the former North Adams Regional Hospital.
Upon her retirement, she volunteered at the Fisher House in Albany. She was a very caring individual who was dedicated to her work and the welfare of the veterans who were in her care. She received the Florence Nightingale Award twice — in 1955 and in 1966 — for her service. She was a kind, generous person who was deeply devoted to her family. She was loved by many and was a devoted daughter, sister and aunt.
She leaves two sisters, Florence Baldessarini of North Adams and Elizabeth D. Brennan of Waltham, and nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and many cousins.
She was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth Rose Laino.
FUNERAL NOTICE — A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Ms. Damiano will be celebrated Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery.
A calling hour will be held Tuesday morning from 10 to 11 a.m. at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams.
