NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The schools' Facilities and Finance subcommittee is recommending that Greylock School close at the end of this school year.   School officials say a number of factors are being considered in accelerating the closing — declining enrollment, the building's physical condition and, not least of all, a looming $2.4 million budget deficit.    The city is currently pursuing a school building project to replace Greylock with a new $61 million structure at same location to open in fall 2027. At that time, Brayton Elementary will close.    The subcommittee began discussions last week as administrators laid out a preliminary proposal to

North Adams Officials Mull School Closure
By Tammy Daniels, iBerkshires Staff
05:27AM / Tuesday, January 30, 2024
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — School officials are eyeing an accelerated closing of an elementary school as they prepare for the coming fiscal year's "fiscal cliff."   A draft budget for fiscal 2025 is up $2,430,054, a 12 percent increase over this year. This is largely being driven by three factors: contracted obligations, higher costs related to out-of-district placements and the loss of nearly $1 million in ESSER funds.   Administrators presented the initial figures to the Finance and Facilities subcommittee on Monday morning along with preliminary proposal to close Greylock School to offset costs.    The subcommittee wasn't ready to make any decisions,
