Body of Man Accused in Adams Stabbing Found, DA Confirms

SAVOY, Mass. — Police located the body of Jeffrey Cote, who was wanted for a stabbing incident last week, about a half mile from his home on Thursday morning.

District Attorney Timothy Shugrue confirmed that he died by suicide but has not revealed the cause or time of death.  

He reported that no weapons were found around Cote and he was believed to have never left the area of his property after the incident.

The body was found by the State Police Special Emergency Response Team and K9 unit around 10 a.m. after nearly continuous searches since June 7, when Cote allegedly broke into the home of his ex-girlfriend and stabbed her numerous times. His body will be

MassDOT Takes on Clarksburg Bridge Project

SteepleCats Swept in Double-Header

Springfield Man Arraigned in Superior Court On Drug Charges

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — On June 8, Antonio Laboy, 25 of  Springfield, was arraigned in Berkshire Superior Court for possession of heroin with intent to distribute, subsequent offense and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, subsequent offense.   According to a report from the district attorney's office, Laboy was present during the execution of a search warrant on a North Adams residence that is a part of an active investigation for narcotics distribution. Brown Family Donates Rare Hoosac Tunnel History Books

Sarah Maclennan reads Volume 2 of 'The Coming of the Train,' one of the books donated to the library in Stanley Brown's memory.    FLORIDA, Mass. — The family of the late Stanley Brown donated two relatively expensive local history books to the Florida Free Library in his memory.   The series they donated — "The Coming of the Train: The Hoosac Tunnel and Wilmington and Deerfield River Railroads and the Industries They Served"  written by the late Rowe resident Brian Donaldson — is composed of two volumes. I Am Afro Street Fair Comes To North Adams

Ninth-Inning Home Run Trips Up SteepleCats

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Sanford scored two runs in the top of the ninth to earn a 2-1 win over North Adams in New England Collegiate Baseball League action on Tuesday.   Jeremiah Jenkins hit a two-out, two-run home run to erase a one-run deficit for the Mainers.   Samuel Tackett had given the SteepleCats the lead with a solo home run in the sixth.   Dominick Marcoccio started for North Adams and went six innings, striking out seven and allowing three hits.   The SteepleCats (1-4) go to Newport on Wednesday.

North Adams Council Approved $47M Spending Plan for Fiscal 2024

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The City Council on Tuesday approved a $47 million budget for fiscal 2024.   The spending plan at $47,410,070 is up $2,873,335, or 6.45 percent, over this year's budget. The increase is largely driven by higher costs for equipment and materials, investment in the police, fire and information technology lines, a nearly half-million hike in medical insurance costs, $223,911 more in the Hoosac Water Quality District assessment and $1.3 million more in educational costs.   The hike in the school budget, however, is being offset by a matching boost in state Chapter 70 education funds. North Adams Finance Approves Public Safety, Public Service Budgets

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Finance Committee last week voted to recommended the final line items for the city's proposed $$47,410,070 budget for fiscal 2024.   The City Council will vote on the spending plan on Tuesday.    The departments reviewed included public safety, for which Mayor Jennifer Macksey is requesting increases to ensure staffing for both police and fire.
