MCLA Men's Basketball Improves to 5-4

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Hayden Morris-Gay scored 20 points Tuesday to lead the MCLA men's basketball team to an 81-52 win over New England College.   Jake Bluestein scored 12 points off the bench, and Quentin Gittens grabbed a team-high seven rebounds in the win.   MCLA (5-4) goes to SUNY Plattsburgh on Saturday.

Retired Adams Police K-9 Kumar Dies

Kumar was 2 years old when joined the Adams force.  ADAMS, Mass. — The town's beloved K-9 Kumar has died. The Police Department posted the news on its Facebook on Tuesday afternoon.   "A somber atmosphere has enveloped the officers and handlers as we mourn the loss of a loyal companion, Kumar, our esteemed police K9. Kumar had been an unwavering force in the fight against crime, his keen senses and unyielding dedication made him an invaluable member of the force," the post stated. "Together with his handler, Sergeant Curtis Crane, Kumar forged a bond, becoming not just a partner but a cherished friend."   Kumar retired earlier this year at

COLA can sweeten retirement and health accounts

It's usually a good idea to contribute to the tax-advantaged retirement and health care accounts available to you. And here's some good news: In 2024, you can put even more into these accounts.   The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced these cost-of-living adjustments: Individual Retirement Account (IRA) – You can contribute up to $7,000 to an IRA for 2024, up from $6,500 this year. The "catch-up" contribution for individuals 50 or older remains $1,000. You can always "max out" on a traditional IRA, but some of your contributions may not be tax deductible, depending on your income. However, all your earnings can grow on a tax-deferred basis.

Brewhaha Owners Head for Retirement, Bid Farewell to Longtime Patrons

Nancy and Barry Garton have been in the food service business for more than three decades. They are retiring after the operating Brewhaha for the last 23 years.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Brewhaha owners Nancy and Barry Garton have sold the cafe and are looking forward to a well-deserved break.   Although, saying goodbye has not been easy.    "To me, it has always been the relationships with our people. I love it here and the fact that they appreciate what we try to do," Nancy said on Monday. "When I look back I think that is what has made us successful. The support and the memories have really made it all worthwhile because it has been hard work.

MCLA Women's Basketball Loses Heart-Breaker on Road

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Taryn White scored 17 points Saturday to lead the Mount Holyoke women's basketball team to a 54-53 win over MCLA.   The Trailblazers overcame a seven-point deficit with four minutes left to take a 53-51 lead on Kristie Zator's 3-pointer with 43 seconds left.   But Mount Holyoke's Libby Harris hit a 3 13 seconds later to give her team the lead for good.   Harris finished with 16 points.   Zator led MCLA with 16. North Adams Veterans Memorial Bridge Deemed 'Structurally Deficient'

Jersey barriers and barrels were put up this week to limit a section of the roadway to two lanes. Plans are to soon prohibit large trucks from the bridge. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The 61-year-old Veterans Memorial Bridge has been declared "structurally deficient" after the most recent inspection by the state Department of Transportation.    The city's Department of Public Services in a Facebook post on Thursday said the state has issued weight limit restrictions and lane closures.    "These restrictions are due to structural deficiencies found during a recent inspection and are necessary to keep the bridge open until a repair plan can be
