BAAMS Presents: Live at Studio 9 With Alex Foster

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — On March 16, Berkshires' Academy of Advanced Musical Studies (BAAMS) will host its third in a series of live music concerts at Studio 9.   The performance will feature saxophonist Alex Foster, who has performed with the "Saturday Night Live" Band for over three decades, and is co-musical director of the Mingus Big Band in New York City.   Foster will play alongside Richard Boulger, trumpet and flugelhorn, with Alex Blake, bass, Dario Boente, piano and keyboards, and Tony Lewis, drums and percussion, along with featured guest David Gilmore.   Studio 9 is located at the Porches located at 18 Veazie Street Tickets are $35 and proceeds

North Adams Planners Reject Setback Waiver for Cannabis Operation

The cannabis store is part of a proposed redevelopment of the former Deep property at River and Marshall. Veteran Spotlight: Army Spc. Robert Dutra

FALMOUTH, Mass. — Robert Dutra served his country in the Army in the Vietnam War as a specialist E-4.    He would do a 10-month tour as a combat soldier, from February to December of 1969.    A graduate of Lawrence High School, he initially joined the Army National Guard. His basic training would take him to Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.    "It was OK, I was 18. I didn't have anything. I was young, in shape and got to meet a few people," he recalled.    While at Fort Leonard Wood, he would also be assigned to four months of Advanced Infantry Training then sent to Fort Benning (now Fort Moore), Ga., and then, overseas to Vietnam at the end

MCLA Baseball, Softball Fall on Florida Trip

NAPLES, Fla. -- Hoosac Valley graduate Abby Bird drove in a pair of runs for MCLA Saturday in a 4-2 loss to St. Joseph of Connecticut.   MCLA's Lora Woyton went 5-2/3 innings in the circule, striking out five and allowing no runs.   Earlier in the day, MCLA dropped a 6-2 decision to Western Connecticut.   Ella Staffier went 2-for-3 with a double, and Sarah Williams went seven innings in the circle.   The Trailblaazers (0-2) plays Alfred State and the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford on Sunday.   Baseball SANFORD, Fla. -- Ty Mazzeo went 2-for-3 for MCLA in a 9-6 loss to Maine-Farmington.   MCLA (2-3) plays Webster on Monday.

Daniel Pearl Scholarship Open for Applications

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Applications are available for the 22nd annual Daniel Pearl Berkshire Scholarship.    The $2,000 award is given in memory of Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter kidnapped and killed in Pakistan early in 2002. Pearl earlier worked in the Berkshires at The North Adams Transcript and The Berkshire Eagle.   While Pearl's career was in journalism, he was also a gifted musician, trained as a classical violinist. He played guitar and mandolin as well, and while living in the Berkshires he performed in a bluegrass band. North Adams Finance Committee Finalizing New Fee Schedule

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Finance Committee is hoping to finally complete a years-long effort to consolidate and update fees and fines that have been scattered throughout the city's ordinances.    Department heads have been consulted and ordinances scoured to pull out fees and list them in an appendix.
