SteepleCats Fall to Nighthawks in Vermont

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. -- Tommy Kent struck out eight and allowed two runs in five innings Wednesday to lead the Upper Valley Nighthawks to a 5-3 win over the North Adams SteepleCats in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.   Daniel Perron Jr. went 2-for-2 with a double for the SteepleCats, who also got doubles from Jake Kulkowski and Aeden Anderson.   Jayder Raifstanger and Sam Sherman each had a hit for the SteepleCats.   North Adams (9-12) looks to snap a two-game skid on Thursday when it plays its annual Independence Day game at Joe Wolfe Field against Sanford, Maine.   Game time is 5:30 p.m. with fireworks following the game.

MCLA to Host 2024 Leadership Conference

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) announces the campus will host the 2024 Leadership Conference from July 5 to 7 – the culminating experience for the Leadership Academy 2023 cohort.   Dr. Darcy Fernandes, Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) senior associate commissioner will open the conference with a keynote presentation on Friday, July 5 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Murdock Hall, Room 218. Lazits Leads Team Past SteepleCats

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Taconic High School graduate Anton Lazits went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI Tuesday to lead the Bristol, Conn., Blues to 7-3 win over the North Adams SteepleCats.   Warren Holzemer went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs for North Adams, which got two hits apiece from Max Palinski and Luke Mistone.   The SteepleCats (9-11) go to Vermont to face the Upper Valley Nighthawks on Wednesday.

North Adams Man Charged with Murder in 2017 Stabbing

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A North Adams man has been charged with murder after the death of a man he stabbed seven years ago.    Travis T. Perras, 31, was indicted last week on a charge of first degree murder in the death of Charles Sauer of North Adams. He entered a plea of not guilty before Judge John Agostini on Thursday and was ordered held without bail.    Perras pleaded guilty in 2018 of stabbing Sauer, then 51, the year before.    Sauer worked for Domino's Pizza in North Adams and was delivering a pizza to a Union Street address called in by Perras on the night of July 14, 2017, when he was attacked and stabbed multiple times in an attempted robbery.

All Saints Episcopal Church Tour and Concert

Berkshires Gets $600K in Bike Path Grants

ADAMS, Mass. — The Berkshires received more than $600,000 for improvements and planning of recreational trails.    The funds are part of some $12 million in awards announced recently for 65 projects across the state by the state Department of Conservation and Recreation's MassTrails program.   "At DCR, we witness firsthand how trails connect communities across Massachusetts, providing essential opportunities for outdoor recreation, tourism, and economic growth," said DCR Commissioner Brian Arrigo in announcing the grants in Holliston on June 21. BCC to Provide Free College With MassEducate, MassReconnect

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College (BCC) will offer free community college to all Massachusetts residents without a bachelor's degree starting this fall after Governor Maura Healey signed the Massachusetts FY25 budge.   A new program called MassEducate will offer tuition- and fee- free community college to all Massachusetts residents, regardless of age, who have yet to earn a bachelor's degree. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Aedan Anderson hit a three-run home run in a five-run second inning to propel the North Adams SteepleCats Monday to a 9-2 win over the Valley Blue Sox.   Antonio Morales went 3-for-5 in a 12-hit attack for the SteepleCats, who jumped out to a 9-0 lead through four innings.   Sam Sherman was 1-for-4 with an RBI and scored a run for North Adams.   Joseph Trombley struck out five in six innings of work to get the win on the mound.   North Adams (8-10) hosts Bristol, Conn., on Tuesday.

SteepleCats Down Danbury on Road

DANBURY, Conn. – Taconic graduate Sam Sherman went 3-for-4 on Saturday night to help the North Adams SteepleCats beat the Danbury, Conn., Westerners, 8-3, in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.   Jake Kulikowski and Luke Mistone each homered, and Jayder Raifstanger (Monument Mountain) and Derek Paris (Mount Greylock) each scored a run for the SteepleCats.   Tanner Duke earned the win on the mound, starting and going six innings. Duke struck out 10 and allowed two runs.   North Adams (8-10) Sunday travels to Rhode Island to face Ocean State.

North Adams Closes Bridge to Sons of Italy Property

The Christopher Columbus bridge has been patched with metal plates over the years.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The bridge on Christopher Columbus Drive has been closed to traffic and the one-way bridge from Western Gateway Heritage State Park will become one lane.    Mayor Jennifer Macksey told the City Council on Tuesday that the bridge to the old Sons of Italy has been closed because it is in "dire repair."   The metal and lumber span over the Hoosic River to State Street has been in rough shape for decades.
