Veteran Spotlight: Marine Capt. Carter Hunt

FALMOUTH, Mass. — Carter Hunt served his country with bravery and distinction in the Marine Corps in the Vietnam War. He retired as a captain.    Growing up in Leominster, he attended Boston College, where he was a starting defensive end on the BC football team, graduating in 1968. He graduated from Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Va., then attended Basic School.   He was sent to Vietnam in October 1969 and described it as, "a busy place … we were scrambling to headquarters to get our assignment."    His first assignment would be commanding a rifle platoon with Echo Company, 5th Marine Division. Have Hope Peer Recovery Center Preparing for Grand Opening

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — For the past six months, a growing community has been meeting weekly to create a safe haven for people in recovery.     And now, that community is able to meet in its own space, the Have Hope Peer Recovery Center located at 37 Main St.   Director Rebecca Dodge on Wednesday pointed out a change from the previous week, the first week the gathering met inside the new center: no borrowed chairs.   "We are sitting on our own chairs," she said to a round of applause.   The organization's mission is peer support recovery rooted in dignity and respect. The Berkshires could see its first major winter snow event this weekend with some outlets predicting over 10 inches to fall starting Saturday night.   iBerkshires has its first cancellation: The take-and-eat meal ministry this Sunday at All Saints Church in North Adams. We will update this listing if we receive more cancellations.    Pittsfield has declared a snow emergency and reminds residents that if they do not have off-street parking to park on the even side from 7 a.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday and on the odd side from 7 a.m. Sunday to 7 a.m. Monday. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — This year the MLK Jr. Day of Service Committee announced that the Rev. Mary Frances Curns has been selected as the recipient of the 2024 Peacemaker Award.   The Peacemaker Award is given annually to an individual or group in Northern Berkshire. The award, which originated as part of the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, is made to persons who have contributed substantially to peace in our region. City Woman Wins Hometown Holidays Gift Basket

Jonathan Secor had some help in pulling the winning ticket. Congrats to Janet O'Neill of North Adams who won the big Hometown Holidays gift basket on Thursday. O'Neill won some $1,300 worth of gift certificates and merchandise.

The drawing could be entered by spending $50 downtown during the Thursday night Hometown Holiday events. Jonathan Secor of MCLA Gallery 51 said 62 people had entered the contest (including the editor of iBerkshires &mdash amazing how much cat toys cost nowadays).
