Brien Center Coping with Staffing Shortages

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Brien Center has been helping Berkshire County residents for more than a century.   These days, the mental health center wants those residents to respond to a "help wanted" sign.   "I would say, probably No. 1 goes back to being short staffed," the Brien Center's Rebecca Phelps-Smith said Monday when asked what the non-profit needs from the community. Snow, Freezing Rain, Plummeting Temps for Christmas Weekend

Christmas this year is expect to be white — as well as icy.   The National Weather Service in Albany, N.Y., has issued a winter weather advisory until 5 a.m. Friday, particularly for Pittsfield and North County, Southern Vermont and eastern New York.    Snow will start falling this afternoon and early evening before turning to rain overnight. Isolated pockets of freezing rain are possible.    The snow, sleet and windy conditions are expected create slippery roads and reduced visibility across the county. Florida Snowmobile Club Gifts Sleds to Gabriel Abbott Schoolchildren

The club gave a sled to every child at the elementary school.  FLORIDA, Mass. — This past weekend's snowstorm was the perfect accompaniment to the Florida Mountain Snowmobile club's gift to local schoolchildren: sleds.    Some 90 to be exact.    The snowmobile club handed out a sled or saucer to every child at Gabriel Abbott Memorial School on Thursday from preschool to Grade 8.    "I used to go to school here, I grew up here, and I remember the snowmobile club, when I was a kid ,used to do pumpkins," Therrien said. North Adams Airport Commission Sets 3-Week Manager Search

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — There was confusion at the most recent Airport Commission meeting about whether the current airport manager will be interim or permanent. 

 

The commission reviewed the job description for the role at its meeting on Tuesday, ultimately voting 3-0 to do a three-week search to fill the position. The current manager, Bruce Goff, was appointed at the commission's previous meeting. 

 

Commissioner William Diamond said it was his understanding the commission would make Goff the permanent manager at the start of the new year. The other members clarified they voted just to make him interim manager.

1Berkshire Accepting Applications for 2023-2024 Youth Leadership Program

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — 1Berkshire's Youth Leadership Program (YLP) announced the launch of the application process for the YLP class of 2023-2024.   The 1Berkshire Youth Leadership Program, open to all current sophomores in the Berkshires, selects a cohort of up to 30 motivated students from all backgrounds for this ten-month experience that will help them to explore the regional economy and develop their leadership skills. Once selected, students will begin the program with a 2.5-day, 2-night retreat in June 2023.   At the retreat, students will meet for the first time, begin to build deep connections, and learn about and advance their individual leadership

McCann School Committee Give Go-Ahead on New HVAC Program

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — After getting a grant from the state worth more than $3.1 million, McCann Technical School has already begun setting up its new heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration program. 

 

"There's a whole lot of fun parts of this, daunting yet it may be. But it's such an exciting thing to do," Superintendent James Brosnan told the school committee on Monday. 

 

The committee approved the program at its meeting Monday and authorized Brosnan to seek engineering help for the proposed 5,580 square-foot HVAC building. The program would provide training to an estimated 100 students each year.

North Adams Delivers Donations from Annual Food Drive

Collection boxes are put out in municipal buildings and facilities each year to gather goods for the annual holiday food drive.  Assistant to the Superintendent Bobbi Tassone, Assistant Superintendent Timothy Callahan and school facilities manager Robert Flaherty helped with the delivery. 

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The city delivered several boxes filled with food, personal care and other essential items to Eagle Street on Monday, all of which were donated as part of this year's annual food drive.

North Berkshire Lights Menorahs to Mark Festival of Lights

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The town marked the beginning of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, on Sunday evening with the lighting of its first menorah.    Installed next to the Christmas tree on the lawn of the Williams Inn, the menorah was sponsored by the Williamstown Chamber of Commerce and celebrated by Rabbis Rachel Barenblat and Seth Wax, chaplain at Williams College.
