Candidates Sought for North Adams School Committee Vacancy

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The School Committee is seeking applicants to fill an unexpired term for the next 10 months.    A joint meeting of the committee and the City Council will vote on the applicants at a special meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 4 p.m.    Mayor Jennifer Macksey, chair of the School Committee, told the panel on Tuesday that it would be "an all call for a letter of interest for people who are interested in joining our fantastic committee."   The vacancy was caused by the resignation of Joshua Vallieres, who was elected in 2021 to complete the last two years of a four-year term. SVHC Enacts New Workplace Violence Policy

BENNINGTON, Vt. — Southwestern Vermont Health Care (SVHC) has implemented a new Zero Tolerance Policy for its hospital campus, medical office building and offsite practices.   The policy and communications plan is a proactive approach detailing what actions and language are not tolerated to address the workplace violence trend currently occurring at healthcare institutions across the United States.        The American Hospital Association (AHA) reports that 44 percent of nurses report an increase in incidence of physical violence in the workplace since the pandemic and 68 percent report an increase in verbal abuse. North Adams Committee Advises Splitting Short-Term Rental Measure

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The General Government Committee is recommending that the short-term rental ordinance be split so that registration, regulations, fees and enforcement fall under the Building Code and the definitions and restrictions in location under the Zoning Ordinances.    The vote was on the advice of the city solicitor and Administrative Officer Katherine Eade, who sectioned off the ordinance.    "She did an excellent job and she did a very short amount of time with one back to city solicitor again who said no, this is about as good as it gets," said Wilkinson. The US National Weather Service has released a Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 7 pm Tuesday, Feb. 7,  morning to 1 am Wednesday morning.   Expect mixed precipitation with snow and sleet accumulation of up to one inch. Ice accumulation should be a light glaze.   Precipitation will start as a mix of snow and rain, transitioning into sleet mixing with freezing rain. No Gilded Gramaphone This Year   Local hopes were high that Pittsfield native Matt Cusson would bring home a Grammy on Sunday but it was not to be.    Cusson had been nominated for his arrangement of the Bee Gees' "How Deep Is Your Love" for a cappella group Kings Return. He lost to John Beasley, who was nominated for his arrangement of Charlie Parker's "Scrapple from the Apple."   This was Cusson's first nomination and he was up against prior Grammy nominees and winners. American Legion Post 125 Honors the Four Chaplains

NORTH ADAMS Mass. — The Northern Berkshire veteran community acknowledged the "Four Chaplains," marking the 80th anniversary of their heroics and sacrifice during the sinking of the SS Dorchester during World War II.   Dozens gathered in the American Legion ON Sunday to pay tribute to the four Army chaplains who who died rescuing civilian and military personnel as SS Dorchester, an American troop ship, sank on Feb. 3, 1943   "This service is a tribute to those courageous chaplains and the 672 brave young men who lost their lives on that fateful night," said American Legion Post 125 Commander Mitchell Kiel. Clarksburg Elementary Working on Student Opportunity Act Plan

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — Clarksburg Elementary School hopes to provide more student intervention with the district's Student Opportunity Act plan. 

 

Tara Barnes, director of pupil services for the Northern Berkshire School Union, spoke with the committee about the plan, which the department of elementary and secondary education requires each district to do. The goal is for districts to provide evidence-based programming for struggling student groups. 

 

"Ultimately, you have to approve the plan that we submit as a district in an official meeting. So I hope by the next meeting that we have a plan for you to review," she said.
