NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Northern Berkshire Veterans Agent Stephen Roy said the veterans food pantry is in short supply with an increased need in the community. "We continue to see more and more folks in this time of need," Roy said. "The price of retail food in grocery stores has exploded, nearly doubling since 2021 with no end in sight. Although our food bank certainly doesn't have everything, it surely lessens the sting at the cash register when folks must buy what we don't have." NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — HEALing Communities North Adams will hold this year's Rally for Recovery on Saturday, Oct. 7, at First Baptist Church. This was rescheduled from Sept. 30 because of rain. The celebration will held in the church's community room at 131 Main St. from 1 to 3 p.m. There will be a resource fair with information for individuals and families related to prevention, treatment, recovery, and harm reduction. Activities will include speakers, including recovery coach Caitlin McKinnon, sharing information on lived experiences and about the upcoming Peer Recovery Center. The store's cats Abbey and Shawna will be transferred to the Williamstown store. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Aubuchon Hardware on Union Street will be closing this fall after 36 years. The interim store manager Scott Wascher made the announcement on his Facebook page Tuesday. He was not immediatley available to speak to iBerkshires yesterday. The closing is due to "falling sales and location," Wascher posted. The store opened at 41 Union, in what had been a Carr's Hardware, in September 1987. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Historical Commission plans to reinstall the thought-to-be-lost tablet honoring former mayor Mayor William Kirk Greer. "Monuments are unveiled with great fanfare, and then they just fade into the background. People walk past them every day, and they don't even notice them," Chairman Paul Marino told the commission Thursday, Sept. 28. Marino, referring to one of his historical essays, told the commission of one such monument honoring William Kirk Greer, who was mayor from 1923 to 1924.
