YMCA Removing Services From North Adams Facility

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Northern Berkshire YMCA branch posted on its website on Thursday that they plan to remove services and programming from the Northern Berkshire branch facility, effective March 29, 2024.     According to the statement:   "Our removal of services from this branch stems from various challenges, including the prolonged pool closure, childcare availability, staffing issues, and ongoing facility maintenance needs. Unfortunately, these factors have made it unsustainable to maintain the level of programming that the Y prides itself on and holds itself accountable to."   According to the message, the YMCA will continue to build its

Vermont Police Identify Victim in Pownal Stabbing

POWNAL, Vt. —  State Police are investigating a fatal stabbing in Pownal that occurred on Tuesday.    The victim was identified as Casey Gras, 36, of Bennington.    An autopsy at the Chief Medical Examiner's Office in Burlington on Wednesday determined the cause of death was multiple stab wounds of the abdomen and chest, and the manner of death is a homicide.   The investigation began at about 3 p.m. when police received a report of an altercation on Chickadee Drive in the Pownal Estates mobile home park. Responding troopers located an adult man deceased at the scene.   The State Police's Crime Scene Search Team is processing the scene where

Softball, Baseball Winter Vacation Camps Offered

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- The Infield Berkshire Baseball Academy is offering winter vacation day camps for baseball and softball players aged 8 to 12.   The baseball camp will run from 9 a.m. to noon on Feb. 19 and 20. The softball camp is 9 a.m. to noon on Feb. 21 and 22.   The cost is $50 per day.   The camp will focus on basic offense and defense skills. Campers are asked to bring a snack, indoor shoes, glove and bat.   The Infield is located at 10 Lyman St.   To register, email theinfieldbba@gmai.com.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Eathan Joseph had a double-double Wednesday for the Eagle Hill basketball team in a 60-45 win over Berkshire Arts and Technology Charter.   Joseph scored 19 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked a couple of shots for Eagle Hill, which used a 26-6 third quarter to break open a five-point game.   The Wolf Pack got 17 points and 10 rebounds from Samseedy Touray and 15 points from Jsaun Griffin.   Touray scored four straight points late in the first quarter to give the hosts a 13-8 lead before Eagle Hill scored on back-to-back possessions to cut it to a one-point game at the end of the period.   Eagle Hill started the second quarter on an 8-0 run that

North Adams School Committee Takes Slow Roll on Greylock Closure

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The School Committee delayed discussion Tuesday on closing Greylock School until more information could be provided by the administration.    The Finance & Facilities subcommittee is recommending closing the deteriorating building that is set to be replaced by a new school in 2027.    School officials say a number of factors are being considered in accelerating the closing — declining enrollment, the building's physical condition and, not least of all, a looming $2.4 million budget deficit. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The schools' Facilities and Finance subcommittee is recommending that Greylock School close at the end of this school year.   School officials say a number of factors are being considered in accelerating the closing — declining enrollment, the building's physical condition and, not least of all, a looming $2.4 million budget deficit.    The city is currently pursuing a school building project to replace Greylock with a new $61 million structure at same location to open in fall 2027. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Longtime North County insurers Deep Associates Insurance Agency have sold to Wheeler & Taylor but manager Carrie Ann Kondel said clients should expect little to change.   "Customers should expect business as usual," she said.
