Man Pleads Guilty to North Adams Home Invasion, Assualt

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — On Tuesday, Jan 9, Arthur McCowan, 35 of Springfield, pleaded guilty to three charges in Berkshire Superior Court.    The Commonwealth requested 2.5 years in the House of Corrections for both counts of Assault and Battery with a Deadly Weapon and 2 years' probation on and after time served for Home Invasion.   McCowan was sentenced by Judge Duncan:    2.5 years in the house of corrections for Assault and Battery with a Deadly Weapon (Knife) 2 years' probation on and after sentence for ABDW 2.5 years in House of Corrections for Assault and Battery with a Deadly Weapon (Shod Foot) 2 years' probation on and after sentence for ABDW

High Winds, Flooding Expected in Berkshire County

There is a winter weather advisory in effect from 3 pm on Tuesday, Jan. 9 to midnight in Northern Berkshire County.   Expect 2 to 5 inches of wet snow and a light glaze of ice. Snow will start falling mid to late afternoon changing into a wintery mix. Precipitation will turn into rain by midnight.   There is also a flood watch in place from 7 pm Tuesday to 1 pm Wednesday, Jan 10.  Temperatures on Tuesday will top out in the high 30s, but temperatures will warm overnight.  Melting snow and rain is expected to cause flooding.    Also, the National Weather Service has a high wind warning in place from 4 pm Tuesday to 7 am Wednesday.   Expect Southeast winds

Northern Berkshire MLK Jr. Day of Service

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Committee invites the public to the annual Northern Berkshire MLK Jr. Day of Service to celebrate the life of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with this annual day of volunteering. 

Gather Monday, Jan. 15, as the Northern Berkshire community celebrates the life, principles, and ideals of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by participating in a "Day of Service." A celebratory luncheon will follow.

The celebration begins at 8:30 a.m. at MCLA's Church Street Center with coffee and pastries. Volunteer site service will take place from approximately 9:30 a.m. to noon.

No Paws Left Behind Seeking to Continue Sonsini's Mission

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The former Eleanor Sonsini Animal Shelter is gearing up to relaunch under a new name once it secures a location.

No Paws Left Behind hopes to open in North Adams, carrying on the no-kill shelter's legacy of homing cats and dogs. The Sonsini shelter announced its closing last summer and manager Noelle Howland saved it by taking leadership.

"We're pretty much ready to go but I just don't have a location yet," Howland said.

The municipal shelter in North Adam's Department of Public Works building is a possible location, she said, but it is a multi-step process that has not yet been set in stone. She added that there are "so many

National Grid Continues Restoration from Weekend Winter Storm

FALMOUTH, Mass. — Carter Hunt served his country with bravery and distinction in the Marine Corps in the Vietnam War. He retired as a captain.    Growing up in Leominster, he attended Boston College, where he was a starting defensive end on the BC football team, graduating in 1968. Have Hope Peer Recovery Center Preparing for Grand Opening

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — For the past six months, a growing community has been meeting weekly to create a safe haven for people in recovery.     And now, that community is able to meet in its own space, the Have Hope Peer Recovery Center located at 37 Main St.   Director Rebecca Dodge on Wednesday pointed out a change from the previous week, the first week the gathering met inside the new center: no borrowed chairs.   "We are sitting on our own chairs," she said to a round of applause.   The organization's mission is peer support recovery rooted in dignity and respect. Adams Selectmen Sign 25-Year Agreement With Campground Developer

An initial plan for the camping area that could include cabins, tents and Airstreams. ADAMS, Mass. — The town of Adams has signed a 25-year development agreement with Shared Estates Asset Fund to construct a camping venue at the Greylock Glen.    The company will pay the town at least $74,400 annually; up to 7 percent of its gross profits; and real estate and property taxes.    The 3-1 vote by the Selectmen came after nearly three hours of reviewing the agreement in executive session with attorneys on Wednesday night.
