Drury High School Announces Winners Of John And Abigail Adams Scholarship

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Drury High School announced that 13 students from the Class of 2026 have earned the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship.    This merit-based award grants recipients a tuition credit for up to eight semesters of undergraduate study at any Massachusetts state college or university.   To qualify for this scholarship, students must achieve both an Advanced score on one of the MCAS assessments in English Language Arts, Mathematics, or STE subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Introductory Physics, or Technology/Engineering) and earn Proficient or Advanced scores on the other two assessments and rank within the top 25 percent of their district, based on combined

Clarksburg Board OKs Water District Grant Agreement

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — The Board of Selectmen voted Monday to approve an updated grant agreement with the Briggsville Water District.   The independent water district has two grants — $140,000 from the state's Rural Development Fund that will be used as the 25 percent match to a $400,000 Federal Emergency Management Agency grant.   The funds will be used toward engineering and upgrading of the 45-year-old public water system. However, the municipal grants must the accepted and administered by the town.    The board members had asked for more concrete language ensuring that the town would not be responsible for any water district debt or

Berkshires' First Snowstorm Could Bring Nearly a Foot of Snow

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The first significant snowstorm of the season is expected on Tuesday, with heavy snowfall forecast across Western Massachusetts.    The National Weather Service in Albany, N.Y., has issued a winter storm warning starting at 7 a.m. on Tuesday with nearly a foot of snow forecast to fall through the day. The warning covers the Berkshires, Southern Vermont and parts of eastern New York State.    As of late Monday, the forecast was 7 to 11 inches of snow accumulation over the Berkshires and Southern Vermont. Swann Finishes Cross Country Campaign on High Note at Williams

Mount Greylock Regional School graduate Kate Swann capped her college cross country career last month by leading Williams College a second-place finish at the NCAA Division III National Championships in South Carolina.   Swann, a captain on the Williams squad this fall, posted a time of 21 minutes, 41 seconds on the 6-kilometer course to earn all-America honors as an individual.   Williams' team finished with 106 points to finish behind DIII Champion New York University with 79 points.   "It was a really, really wonderful day," Swann told Williams' sports information office. North Adams Tree Lighting Remembers Passed Community Members

Councilor Wayne Wilkinson's granddaughter Emelia lights  one of the Main Street trees.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Lights shimmered down Main Street on Wednesday as the city marked the start of the holiday season with its tree lightings.    This year's tree at Monument Square was donated by Juan Bolte of Houghton Street in remembrance of Barbara Breda-Bolte, who died in April.    Breda-Bolte had wanted to donate the double balsam that is about 30 feet tall last year, but her health prevented it, Mayor Jennifer Macksey said.    "This year, Juan and the family chose to honor her wish. Veteran Spotlight: Army Lt. Col. David Puppolo

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — David Puppolo served his country in the Army from 1985 to 2006, retiring as a lieutenant colonel.    He grew up in North Adams, and graduated from Drury High school and the University of Miami in the state of Florida and did his basic at Fort Knox, Ky.    "I had a calling to serve," he said. Local High School Football Officials Head to Gillette Stadium

The Berkshire County Football Officials Association is pleased to announce a crew of eight of its members will work one of eight state championship games at Gillette Stadium this week.   The local crew will officiate the Division 7 game on Thursday at 5 p.m. between Amesbury and Cohasset.   The crew includes: Rick Ciampa, referee; Josh Healy, umpire; Michael Rooney, line judge; Reggie Leonard, head linesman; David Jordan, back judge; Matt Emerson, side judge; Chuck Poulton, field judge; and Aaron Kipp, game clock operator.

North Adams City Council Hears From Berkshire Food Project

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — More people are seeking food and warmth and social connectedness — and that's been reflected in the Berkshire Food Project's numbers.   The nonprofit's Executive Director Matthew Alcombright was asked to speak to the City Council on food insecurity by Councilor Andrew Fitch.   Alcombright came with hard numbers: There's been a 21 percent increase over last year in people availing themselves of the free lunch and a 52 percent jump in the last five or six weeks. Hundreds Raise Tens of Thousands of Dollars for Food Pantries at Thankful 5K

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Lauren Osborne did not finish in the top 10 of Thursday morning's 10th annual MountainOne Thankful 5K.   Not even the top 100.   But with their full-fledged turkey costumes, it was a shoo-in that she and her husband Carl would be in the running for best dressed.   At 9 a.m., the Osborne family toed the line for the 3.1-mile circuit around the Berkshire Community College campus, out West Street and back to the parking lot.   Unlike most of the 561 runners who finished the course, the Osbornes wore festive attire that included "feathers" that stretched from their wrists to their waists.   The family has competed in the annual
