Motorcyclist Dies After North Adams Crash

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A motorcyclist died after crossing lanes on West Main Street and crashing into a home Wednesday night.   According to the district attorney’s office, just before 9 p.m., a motorcycle driver, traveling east, crossed into the westbound lane and collided with a residence.   The motorcyclist was taken to North Adams Regional Hospital, where they were pronounced dead an hour later.   Authorities have not yet identified the driver, and the crash remains under investigation.

Upper Valley Rolls Past SteepleCats

HARTFORD, Vt. -- Anthony Greco went 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBIs Thursday to lead the Upper Valley Nighthawks to a 12-1 win over North Adams in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.   Joseph Chambers went four innings on the mound for Upper Valley, allowing just an unearned run.   Robert Stang led the SteepleCats' offense, going 2-for-4 at the plate.   North Adams (1-4) is back on the road on Saturday, going to Sanford, Maine.

KEENE, N.H. -- Michael O'Brien went 3-for-4 with a home run, a triple and four RBIs Wednesday to lead the Keene Swamp Bats to a 7-1 win over North Adams in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.   Marshall Lipsey was 3-for-4 with a double and drove in a pair of runs, and four Keene pitchers combined to scatter three hits.   One of those hits was from North Adams' Gabriel Natividad, who hit a solo home run in the second inning to give the SteepleCats at 1-0 lead.   North Adams led until the bototm of the sixth, when Keene scored four times.   North Adams (1-3) travels to Hartford, Vt., to face Upper Valley on Thursday.

Community Development Increase a Focus in North Adams Budget Vote

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The City Council Tuesday passed a $52.3 million spending plan for fiscal year 2026 that represents a 7 percent increase from the city budget for the year that ends on June 30.   On a series of unanimous votes, the council OK'd an FY26 budget that both accounts for a spike in the city's health insurance costs and adds capacity to City Hall to address community needs, Mayor Jennifer Macksey said during a public hearing that preceded the council's vote.   By percentage, one of the larger increases in the budget was in the "general government" line item, which is up by nearly 20 percent to just more than $2.5 million for the coming

North Adams Finance Approves Public Services Budgets

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The City Council will be deciding on a proposed $52 million budget for fiscal year 2026, a 7 percent increase from the previous year.    The anticipated budget is projected is up about $3.4 million, largely driven by material expenses, wages, and insurance.   Mayor Jennifer Macksey plans to use $2 million from the stabilization account to balance it; this will leave about $1.5 million in the account.    Most line items are near or level funded, with wages increased 3 percent across the board.    The Veterans Services budget is expected to increase by $4,924, bringing its total to $421,160. Letter: North Adams Public Hearing on the City Budget on June 10

North Adams should provide a meaningful and practical opportunity to engage citizens in a dialogue on the budget.

Traditionally the City Council Finance Committee conducts meetings at which there is a line-by-line review of the budget.

This year five meetings lasting 1.5 to 2.5 hours were held over a two-week period. These meetings meet the needs of the City Council members to take a deep dive into the budget. They do not meet the needs of most members of the public. It is challenging for most North Adams citizens to commit eight hours over a two-week period to attend these meetings.

Northern Berkshire Community Contra Dance
