North Adams Man Sentenced on Illegal Firearm Charge

PITTSFIELD, Mass.— On Feb. 6, Varian Lefebvre, 30 of North Adams, pleaded guilty to three charges in Berkshire Superior Court.    The Defendant pleaded guilty to, and was sentenced on, the following charges:

Clarksburg Select Board OKs Municipal Proposals, Paint Stewardship Bill

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — The Select Board last week endorsed several proposals by the Small Town Administrators of Massachusetts and a paint stewardship program making its way through the Legislature.    STAM is part of the Massachusetts Municipal Association, which shares many of its priorities.    "We're hoping to lobby, the Legislature for legislation promoting the the agenda of small and rural communities," said Town Administrator Carl McKinney, a member of STAM. Massachusetts College Of Liberal Arts (MCLA) Philosophy Professor Paul Nnodim has released his sixth book, "Ubuntu," A Comparative Study of an African Concept, with co-editor Austin Okigbo, associate professor of ethnomusicology, African Studies, and global health at the University of Colorado Boulder.   The book was published by Leuven University Press earlier this month and contains contributions from other scholars. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Feb. 24 is the second in a series of monthly live music concerts at Studio 9 from Richard Boulger and the BAAMS' Faculty Band.   Doors open: 6:30pm. FEMA Awards Funds to Massachusetts for COVID School Testing Costs

BOSTON — The Federal Emergency Management Agency will be sending almost $13.5 million to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to reimburse it for the cost of providing testing at public schools during the COVID-19 pandemic.   The $13,450,826 Public Assistance grant will reimburse the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) for contracting with Trans Med USA Inc. and Merrow Medical to provide test kits at schools between July 2022 and May 2023.   The department purchased and distributed 1,089,354 COVID-19 antigen tests to students, faculty and staff at schools statewide during that time period.   "FEMA is pleased to be able to assist

Clarksburg to Consider Community Preservation Act

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — The Select Board on Thursday voted to place the adoption of the state Community Preservation Act on the town meeting warrant at the request of the Historical Commission.   The state law allows for towns to add up to a 3 percent surcharge on property taxes to fund historical preservation, open space and recreation and affordable housing that can be matched by state monies.   "We've become as a Historical Commission aware of the Community Preservation Act for us in the way of raising funds for historic preservation," Commissioner Susan Brandon told the Select Board.
