North Adams' Costs Drop for Greylock School Project

  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The estimated cost of a new Greylock School to the city has dropped by millions of dollars.   Jesse Saylor of TSKP Studio, the project designer, said the Massachusetts School Building Authority had dramatically increased the amount of funding available for projects.   "Now, we could see it at $19 [million] and our range is $19 [million] to $23 [million]," he told the School Building Committee last week. Florida School's Pie Auction Raises $1,500 for Local Charities

The benefit auction raises funds for the Berkshire Humane Society,  the local food pantry and the American Legion's Christmas dinner.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Gabriel Abbott Memorial School's 351 Project has raised just under $1,500 for charity.    Students in the community service learning project held their annual Oh Be Thankful Pie Auction on Tuesday at the American Legion along with a chinese auction of donated gifts from local businesses and individuals and a 50/50 raffle.    The pie auction included other goodies, such as award-winning peanut butter and chocolate balls  and a pumpkin roll, and goods were produced by teachers, staff,

Local Athletes Earn League Honors with College Teams

Lee High School graduate Elizabeth Brown was named to the all-Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference first team this fall.   Brown, a sophomore at MCLA, led the Trailblazers in digs, with 3.27 per set, and was third on the team in kills with 2.29 per set.   She played in all 26 of MCLA's matches, starting 25, and had a season-high 18 kills in a five-set loss to Westfield State.   Brown was named second-team all-league last fall after her first season at MCLA.   Her former Lee teammate and current MCLA teammate MaKayla Schuerer appeared in 15 matches for MCLA (21-5) in her first year on the squad. North Adams Police Hold Suspect on Firearms Charges

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The discharge of a firearm in the wee hours of Thanksgiving landed a man in custody over the holiday.    Police say they responded to a "large fight in progress" at about 12:40 a.m. on Thursday at State Street Tavern. Officers were told one of the men involved had firearm and, once they arrived, learned that he had fired off a round into the air during the altercation.   He was arrested at the scene. North Adams Man Pleads Guilty to Drug Charges

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — On Nov. 15 Marcus Johnson, age 23 of North Adams, pled guilty to Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class A Substance, heroin and Possession with Intent to Distribute a Class B Substance, cocaine.    The Honorable Judge Agostini sentenced Johnson to 3.5 to 4 years on each charge, to be served concurrent. Additionally, there was a forfeiture of $3,530.00. Johnson pled guilty the day his trial was set to begin.   In 2019, the North Adams Police Department was investigating the supplying and dealing of drugs coming into the North Adams area. Zebra Mussel eDNA Detection in Onota Lake

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Zebra mussel eDNA has been detected at Onota Lake by the Commonwealth's Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR).    This discovery was made as part of regular monitoring of the lake for these types of invasive species. This detection only impacts boating operations at the lake and has no impact to other recreational uses of the lake.   Zebra mussels are invasive freshwater mollusks that present a variety of ecological, recreational, and economic concerns.
