North Adams Looking to Upgrade Council Chamber's Audio, Visual Equipment

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The city's hoping to remove the nest of wires crossing Council Chambers and replace television equipment that's old enough to vote.   Northern Berkshire Community Television Director Matthew Tucker and the city's Information Technology Director Mark Pierson updated the council on Tuesday on efforts to bring the building's audio and visual capabilities up to par.   Tucker called it "the most ironic presentation" as sound cut out again on the cable access channel's broadcast of the meeting.   "The audio is not behaving," he said, offering his apologies. Berkshire Health Group Sets 8.75% Premium Rise for FY27

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The towns and school districts in Berkshire Health Group will see an 8.75 percent increase in health insurance premiums in the fiscal year that begins on July 1.   Ten of the 12 voting members on the BHG board decided Wednesday morning at McCann Technical School on a vote of 8-2 to set the health plan rates for municipal employees in the member towns and districts.   The hike is a little more than half of the 16 percent increase the joint purchase group enacted for the current fiscal year.   Wednesday's decision will come as welcome news to town managers and administrators and school superintendents who may have been fearing a repeat of FY26,

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The 19th Mathias Jessup Bartels benefit cross-country ski race and tour will be held on Sunday, Feb. 1, at 11:30 a.m. at Mount Greylock Regional School.    The event will feature a 3-kilometer kids’/beginner’s race, a lollipop race for young children, and a 6K classic race. North Adams Airport Commissioners Get Update on Hangar Project

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Airport Commission received an update on a new hangar construction project that is expected to go out to bid in March.   Peter Enzien of Stantec, the airport's engineer, reported Tuesday that preliminary work is progressing on the proposed six-unit hangar project. Enzien said survey work is complete, noting the site is a simple, flat plot of land.   "It is a big, wide-open, flat area, so it did not take them long," he said.   Enzien said he is waiting on the results of some soil borings, noting that a potentially high clay composition could cause some hiccups.   "The soil here is not good; there is a lot of clay here. Berkshire Food Project Celebrates Record Numbers, Volunteers

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Berkshire Food Project serves more than meals: it serves community.    Michael and Lyn Robertson love volunteering and have been with the Food Project for six years.   "I like it because you get to know some of the folks," Mike Robertson said. "You'll see Ella and say, 'Hey, Ella, how you doing? Give me a fist bump.' And you know you made that connection with them. Central Berkshire Habitat for Humanity offers Free Tax Assistance

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — For more than a dozen years, Central Berkshire Habitat for Humanity (CBHFH) has provided free income tax preparation to qualifying households through the IRS-supported Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.   Services are available to households earning $69,000 or less, as well as individuals with disabilities and older adults.   All VITA volunteers complete extensive training and are IRS-certified.
