Washington's Birthday will be celebrated on Monday, Feb. 16.

The holiday was first enacted by Congress in 1879 to mark George Washington's birthday on Feb. 22 and later moved to the third Monday in February in 1968. While the name of the federal holiday remains Washington's Birthday, it is more often referred to as Presidents Day to include the birthday of Abraham Lincoln on Feb. 12.

Court Briefs: Contractor Guilty of Tax Fraud, Windsor Man Sentenced for Threats

Windsor Man Sentenced in Threat Case   A Windsor man was sentenced Wednesday in federal court in Springfield for making online threats and extortionate demands.   Michael Andrew Rodgers, 32, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Mark G. Mastroianni to 15 months in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release. In November 2025, Rodgers pleaded guilty to one count of threatening interstate communications and one count of extortionate interstate communications. Rodgers was arrested and charged in September 2024.   On April 5, 2023, Rodgers posted a threat on the Google review page of a Springfield medical practice that stated: "They gonna get what's

'Crucible' Book Reading at North Adams Library

Key West Bar Gets Probation in Underage Incident

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Key West is on probation for the next six months after an incident of underage drinking back in November.    The License Commission had continued a hearing on the bar to consult with the city solicitor on whether charges could be brought. The opinion was that it was up to the District Attorney.    Chief Mark Bailey at Tuesday's commission meeting said he did not believe criminal charges applied in this instance because no one at the bar "knowingly or intentionally" supplied the alcoholic beverages.    "I feel that the bartender thought that the person was over 21 so it's not like she knowingly provided alcohol

Just because the Tuesday reached a relatively balmy 30 degrees, don't think that winter is giving up.    The National Weather Service in Albany, N.Y., has issued a winter weather advisory from Tuesday afternoon through 6 a.m. Wednesday for up to 4 inches of snow and sleety ice.   Plan on slippery roads and hazardous conditions driving home. Clarksburg School Eyeing ADA Improvements This Summer

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — School officials are hoping to take the next stop in renovations to the 60-year-old school with a refit of the bathrooms.    Some upgrades had been done but there have been issues with obsolete parts and making them compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.    "There's multiple bathroom issues. Berkshires Awarded MVP Grants

BOSTON — The Healey-Driscoll Administration announced over $3 million through the Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness Planning 2.0 (MVP 2.0) grant program to help local communities take concrete steps to prepare for climate change.    In Berkshire County the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission (BRPC) on behalf of Adams, Lanesborough, North Adams, and Williamstown was awarded $325,000.   Monterey was awarded $100,000.   Twenty-one municipalities and three regional groups representing 11 additional municipalities are included in this round of grantees. Police Called for Conflict at Drury

  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — School officials say a police presence at Drury High School on Monday morning was related to a "verbal confrontation" between students stemming from an "incident" over the weekend.    The high and middle school went into lockdown for a brief period as police and school administrators dealt with the problem.    Superintendent Timothy Callahan provided the public schools' official statement, which was sent out to the school community.   On Tuesday, he said "It was an escalated verbal conflict, and staff intervened to ensure that it did not become a fight." The groundhog saw his shadow and hunkered down for the never-ending winter as more snow and more cold hits the Berkshires this weekend.    The National Weather Service in Albany, N.Y., has issued a winter weather advisory from 7 p.m. Friday to 7 p.m. Saturday for snow and gusty winds.    The region could get between 3 and 6 inches of snow and wind gusts up to 35 mph, which will cause blowing and drifting of snow. This will particularly hit Northern Berkshire and western Windham County in Vermont.    Plan on slippery road conditions.
