PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The district attorney says Kelsie Cote assaulted and killed her grandmother with scissors and a paper weight on Halloween night and attempted to conceal the evidence. On Thursday, Cote was arraigned in Berkshire Superior Court for first degree murder of Doris A. Cote on or between Oct. 31 and Nov.1, 2022. Her counsel waived the reading of the remaining counts on the indictment and a pre-trial hearing has been set for Nov.14. Cote, 26, of 22 Rich St. in North Adams, was charged with murder, assault to murder and evidence tampering in the death of her 74-year-old grandmother.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The five Berkshire County Rotary Clubs will participate in Rotary's annual Day of Service on Saturday, May 20. North Adams will be cleaning, painting and doing minor repairs to the North Adams Visitor Center. Williamstown will be helping the teen center create a garden of raised beds to enable learning about growing vegetables and herbs. Pittsfield will add native plants to the Conte Community Garden to promote pollination as well as refreshing the soil and planting an educational tea garden. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. On Thursday, May 11, Shelly Nichlen, 43 of North Adams, pleaded guilty to one count of Home Invasion and two counts of Assault and Battery with a Deadly Weapon as a joint venture. Nichlen was sentenced by the Honorable Judge Flannery to 2.5 years in the House of Corrections with conditions upon release: enter a residential drug treatment program then go to an outpatient drug treatment program and remain drug and alcohol-free. On September 24, 2017, Nichlen and two additional perpetrators, Ronald Sanford and Arthur McCowan, conspired to rob the victim. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Two new tenants will open on the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art campus: Gary Lichtenstein Editions LLC and JZJN architecture. Lichtenstein Editions is a publisher and printer of fine art silkscreen editions and will be located in Building 13, in the gallery formerly occupied by Eckert Fine Art. Gary Lichtenstein, with managing partner Melissa Marr, said he expects to open the second week of June. "We've been in discussions with the director there, Kristy Edmunds, for over a year," Lichtenstein told the Mass MoCA Commission on Monday, adding he had worked with her before. I read with disappointment MCLA's decision not to move forward with proposed housing for the homeless on their campus. I have also been reading with even greater disappointment, the commentary surrounding the proposed location as well as comments I have heard from folks around the city. Much of what I read and heard was deeply rooted in NIMBYism, stigma and implicit bias around the issues of homelessness and substance use disorder. And while MCLA President Birge stated that there were many unanswered questions that prompted his most recent decision, I would think that the tone of our community and our leadership had a lot to do with the outcome.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Frank R. Stiles American Legion Post 125 will be hosting a reception for a group of Veterans and Scouts as they complete a 100 Mile Walk from Sutton. The event will take place Sunday, May 21, 2023 at 12:45 p.m. The walkers will be following the route of Ashland St, Main St, and American Legion Drive. It is requested that supporters line the streets as the walkers pass. The License Commission last week approved two one-day licenses for alcohol at the Eagle Street Beach Party this July 15 and one day licenses for First Friday activities through October. Desperados for years had served up margaritas during the adult portion of the popular beach party, when Eagle Street is covered with sand from end to end. But with the restaurant now shuttered, the Elks Club has stepped in to do the pouring. Six flowers — each in a rainbow color and representing a Massachusetts wildflower — will be painted on Eagle Street by volunteers. The Public Arts Commission on Monday approved the street mural that will be part of the next First Friday event in June to mark Pride Month.
